Anne McCaffrey created Pern and peopled it with all kinds of characters, except religious ones. The society is vast and well-populated and gets along fine with churches or churchmen.
And other such that you know of? Doesn't have to be scifi/fantasy, I just want to see how the author handles it. TIA

I loved Pern and the whole series...however for a well researched series that does not ignore religion but, in the light of this centuries exposure of political and religious corruption, lampoons pins it to the wall, is the David Weber "Safehold Series".
Written in the style of the C.S Forrester "Hornblower" series to start with it becomes a globe spreading anti organised religion, revolt fest. Great light reading for a weekend or four. Rattling tales.
Thanks, I'll check it out. I have read several of Weber's books.
I liked Pern because it showed that there was no need for religion by showing a society where its absence isn't even noticed. People are "good without god" because the thought never occurs to them.
Sociologically speaking, there actually have been atheistic societies. Just peaceful people living in the jungles with no sense of god or Gods.
Weber was technologically inclined. McCaffrey made Pern a feudal society that was beginning to unravel. Your societies were stone age? (Just looking for variations, not claiming any pride of place for a system.)
