Future Religions

So, I've perused the boards a bit to see if a topic like this is out there as I hate to post a repeat discussion, but haven't found it yet...

Basically, I'm curious if others ponder the same absurdities I do, namely, current trends becoming future religions to war and murder over... I can honestly see a hundred, two hundred years down the road two religious factions waring (probably over rights to Jerusalem, that'll get added in somewhere, I'm sure, though, I think it would be funny if it were Detroit instead,) one side flying the flag of the Invisible Pink Unicorn while the other totes the colors for the Flying Spaghetti Monster.

The start of it all will of course be some printed version of origin stories for each 'deity' or even just miles deep forum posts on the topic. The truth we all know today, they're just punny icons to help atheists spot one another or just to show a bit of comedic pride in our beliefs, but with time comes obfuscation, I think. I genuinely fear to see what this world looks like in one to two hundred years (if we haven't obliterated everything, that is.)

Thoughts?

New religion are spawned by

New religion are spawned by old cults.

Extrapolation -

The difference between a cult and a religion - in a cult there's one person at the very top, who is fully aware that the whole thing is a sham.

In a religion, that person died.

I actually believe that

I actually believe that Atheism will lead to a new religion. I do not think human beings have ever existed without religion of some sort (Communism, Nazism and Kim Jong-un's N. Korea are all examples of religiosity as well). There is something to the expression "Religion is the opium of the masses." People just are not that smart. They need something to fill in the gaps.

I think a future religion will be more of a Pantheism; the belief that all reality is identical with divinity. (Obviously attributing characteristics to the cosmos that are unverifiable and outlandish.) The cosmos becomes God and all in it a part of God. This is very much like a reworking of Hinduism without the cast system or the idea of Karma, two of the most horrible philosophies on the planet.

I just think that as the Jesus myth gets exposed, those with the propensity for religious belief will turn to pantheism. The god of the Gaps will not go away.

I can just see it now... The Great Atheist Wars! The battle cry heard across the lands would be, "WE BELIEVE LESS THAN THEY!!!"

I think religion is the last

I think religion is the last bastion of superstition and that an educated, informed, connected modern world will be rid of all superstition, possibly in a few generations. Religion needs to be seen in the context of superstitions in general, history and human development.

@Q Re: Cpt. Kirk would be upset

Nah. The Kardashian's aren't green or alien looking (Well.... okay. They aren't GREEN.), so I don't suppose Kirk would be too upset about it. LOL
Besides, I think worshipping the Tribbles would be much more satisfying.

i prefer khan to be worshiped for being super human/alien leader. i like how benedict cumberbatch played the roll of khan saving his crew from firing them in a torpedo to planet klingon.

then Spock just kicked his super human ass.... in the movie "star trek into the darkness"

But they don't have the ass

But they don't have the ass Kim does...also, two are men and the latter is some esoteric concept that's nebulously defined. Would probably be a guy too.

Actually, I don't think Cpt. Kirk would really mind that too much, either. LOL

Unfortunately, I don't think

Unfortunately, I don't think humanity will ever be free from the scourge of religion. We can only hope that its rendered inert. Something along the lines of how Shinto is in Japan.

Well, I think the numbers

Well, I think the numbers show, religions are disappearing. So I'd like to think that within a couple hundred years, all of this belief in fairy tales will be a thing of history.

I'm hoping this happens before we destroy ourselves over total make believe BS. Pretty embarrassing to admit I'm part of such a brainless species, that this could actually happen.

Cardassians, Kardashians it

Cardassians, Kardashians it's all good lol
I think there are more of us "free minded folk" pit there. We just don't share our non-belief out of fear of the superstitious. Look how many people voted for Trump! (Since this is a safe space, I'll admit I did) hell I have a bumper sticker and live in a predominately blue state!

One day in the future there

One day in the future there will be a unified government throughout the world and the "war on terrorism will be the only war that exists. It will actually be a war on the people. Obedience will be demanded and expected by a "religion". This religion will take the form much like North Korea's religion of dictator idol worship. No one will believe it but they will obey it enthusiastically. Several underground religions will emerge and a constant war of intrigue will ensue. It really won't matter what manner r form these new religions will take, it is enough that they inspire insurrection. Perhaps even a figure will emerge to venerate surely this with be a mythical savior to rescue the people from the ravages of oppression.
A rebel leader may even emerge that is strong enough to challenge the government and he/she will assume the mantle of savior. They may even believe it and the people will replace one evil for another. This will go on endlessly until a force of discovery and intelligence renders these successions of self-proclaimed gods irrelevant. My guess that these religions will all be much like the ones we have now complete with ceremony and false hope. I'm sure someone will magically discover a text (on a phone) that predicts (after the fact) a savior and that will be the basis for the religion for a while!
