It is important to differentiate between acceptable Muslim behavior and Islamism, but I sometimes find it hard to see Muslims living as peacefully as Christians - and that's not saying much.

Islam seems dogged by a seudo-ideology it might never entirely shed and sectarian differences that will last as long as religion itself.

I believe the idiom for this is that it's acceptable to 'blame the pyramid for the height of the capstone'. Anybody who accepts the Qur'an as the literal, infallible word of their creator must be held responsible when the barbarous, medieval tribalism it espouses, glorifies, and demands of its faithful is carried out in the modern world. Two words: Sura 9.
I don't see it as any more or less hateful/crazy than that bible/Christianity. Anyone who thinks they know the mind of god has the potential to be very dangerous in the right (or perhaps wrong) situation.
I know a number of muslims as I do come from a muslim background and I can attest to the fact that muslims like most other religious people are ignorant about what is written in the Quran, maybe more so. The quran is read in ancient arabic and so no one understands what it says. So most people that believe the quran is literally true have no idea what it says (absolutely no idea). All they are fed is the interpretation of clerics who say whatever they like (these stupid clerics release fatwas (decrees) from time to time citing the quran. Recently some idiot outlawed chess saying it is unislamic, plus these guys are corrupt and will issue a fatwa for a mere sum of Rs25,000 or less, which is not a lot).
If people actually read and understood what the book said they would surely think twice. I believe somewhere the book talks of sun setting in muddy spring and draws allusion to the fact that earth is flat or on the back of a whale with mountains holding it in place and various other nonsense it stole from the bible or torah or whatever else was lying around at the time.
In Bombay we had a terrible terrorist attack (26/11) which lasted 3 days. One of the terrorists was taken alive, It is said he was shown the dead bodies of his companions at which time he wept profusely as he did not understand why their bodies were rotting and not covered with rose petals and smelling of fine perfume as promised by the imams that recruited and brainwashed him.
These people are uneducated, desperate gullible or whatever they are, most of them have not read the book at all.
Secular education is in my opinion the only way to combat islamism or radical belief for that matter of any kind. I know that is an oversimplification of the issue but if people are just made more aware of the secular world with some true insight into the superstition of their beliefs we may not have such a fervent extremist society or at the very least vastly reduce their numbers.
