Many Americans Don't Think Atheists Have 1st Amendment Rights

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/muslims-atheists-first-amendment-rig...

Nearly a quarter of Americans ― 22 percent ― either don’t know or don’t believe that U.S. Muslims are granted the same constitutional protections as other citizens. Roughly 20 percent don’t know or don’t think that atheists are protected under the First Amendment.

The First Amendment is under attack from various sides at present. A lot of people seem to think freedom of speech is only for people they agree with. And of course, separation of religion and state only applies to religions other than evangelical Christianity, right?

It's only free speech after it has been (deep) state approved.

22% ? It would not have surprised me if the number was 60%. That is the number of Americans who believe the Noahs Ark/ Flood story.

60%??? You people from the

You people from the USA won't stop surprising me.

There are many previous flood myths in many cultures, such as the Sumerian, Mesopotamian and Greek myths.

As usual, in Judeo-Christian mythology, plagiarism after plagiarism.

I would have to review the survey and methodology. The fake news hate site known as "huffing and puffing the most" is discredited and not reliable.

The Huffington Post is one of the most accurate news sources in the world. Yes the OPED leans left but the news stories are accurate and meet the highest standard of journalistic ethics.

Right, I'm sure this will be reported by the ever so reliable Breitbart News or the Drudge Report.

Sadly accurate. This is why I am mostly just a USA passport holder. Since 2001 I have spent approx 1.5 years actually residing in the States and before that I lived in NYC for 10 years where it was easy to fool oneself into believing it was another country. It's so sad because it wouldn't have to be that way. In some places, it's like they are willfully, intentionally ignorant and damned proud of it.

There are also wonderful things about the States. This just isn't one of them.

Americans were stupid enough

Americans were stupid enough to elect the current Idiot in Chief.... nothing surprises me about their lack of knowledge and common sense

The U.S. political machine

The U.S. political machine elected him. The U.S. public did not.

You guys are both right.

You guys are both right.

Though I would replace "stupid" with "uneducated" or "inexperienced". I personally know people who supported Bernie Sanders in the Dem primaries and then voted for Trump or for a third party in the general. Mostly younger people and a couple of older guys who just haven't been anywhere but their own hometown and don't know what fascism looks like. These are not stupid people I'm talking about.

And of course there is a political machine at work, but it wouldn't have worked so well in this case if there weren't so many undereducated people who just don't know anything. Although, that is a part of the political process as well, keeping people un- or misinformed.

WTF?! How so? Was it a punishment for the Clintons? Because Sanders and tRump are sooo different to me...

I know, it's crazy. Much has

I know, it's crazy. Much has to do with Clinton representing the establishment, which is in fact quite accurate. The Democractic party is just as corrupt as the Republicans when it comes to campaign financing, under the table deals, and tit for tat payoffs, and the people want a change. Both Sanders and Trump represented a change, though certainly not the same change.

But many, many Americans don't know what exactly needs to change and they don't know how to critically reason or to hold an abstract idea in their heads long enough to figure out when the wool is being pulled over their heads, so they are very susceptible to advertising campaigns like trump's.

Due to a systematic "dumbing down" of the American education system, young people coming of age in the last decade or so are sorely lacking critical thinking skills. Not only do they not know regular stuff that any child in Barcelona knows, they don't even know how to categorize and make connections with information when they do get it. And that's how those with power want it, they want good little consumer worker bees.

I happened to be in America on the last election, so I voted. But I had to hold my nose closed as I voted for Clinton. I voted for her because the alternative was just to terrible to play games with (as we see now). But the Democrats are becoming something no better than the Republicans, except that the Democrat agenda doesn't call for the stripping away of personal liberties like freedom from racism or homophobia, while Republican want to impose religious beliefs and standards as actual law.

Sanders called for a change in the Democrats' agenda, and if he had been allowed to win the primary, he likely would have beaten trump. His losing the primary was largely blamed on action taken (and not taken) by the Democrats establishment, and those who had been following Bernie felt betrayed and shut out of the process. Some of them voted for trump, some of them voted for third party candidates, and some didn't vote. Seeing as Clinton won the majority of actual votes but lost the electoral, chances are good that all those lost Sanders votes with the ones Clinton did get would have handily beaten out trump'

Sorry if this is long-winded and not clearly laid out. I am just now thinking this stuff up off the top of my head as I type, I have been avoiding doing any actual thinking or research about it. Don't take what I say as "gospel truth", but I do feel I'm on to something with this line of thinking.

CM: Much has to do with

CM: Much has to do with Clinton representing the establishment You're totally right. It's sad that the first woman candidate for President had to be Hillary, and against Sanders no less... I think USA needs a strong third and fourth party. One for a real left party and the other for taking out every tea-partist and other wackos from the Republican party, so GOP could remain a right-wind party, but with a little less of insanity.

About the "dumbing down" of the education is no news to me, but I guess it's getting worse... I spent a summer studying in Florida in an exchange program 23 years ago, and they ran several educational test in order to compare our grades to the educational system there, and they concluded that we Spanish teens were 2 years ahead in almost every skill...

Sanders called for a change in the Democrats' agenda... I totally agree with your reasoning. I think Sanders would have won Cheeto-In-Chief.

cmallen's picture
"Cheeto-In-Chief" ha!

"Cheeto-In-Chief" ha!

Yes, it is a shame about the first woman president, it's something about which the US is very backward. Unfortunately, Clinton really does have shady business in her past and possibly present (not all that Benghazi and emails BS, but other stuff). Elizabeth Warren would probably have been the best bet and would have won on a ticket with Sanders. She is one of my heroes.
