Study of Atheists and Spirituality

Good afternoon!

I am seeking participants for a study of atheists and spirituality for my master’s thesis at Ball State University. The study involves a survey with questions about spirituality and demographic information that takes approximately 15 minutes to complete. To be eligible to participate, you must be 18 years of age or older, live in the United States, and identify as an atheist.

Click the link below to participate:

There is also an optional interview portion that participants may agree to take part in. The interview will take approximately one hour to complete, and will be conducted via telephone or in-person. It includes questions regarding spirituality, atheism, and practices related to these identities.

If you would like more information about the study, please contact:

Investigator Jordan Reinoehl at jmreinoehl@bsu.edu

Thank you!

I took the survey. I found

I took the survey. I found one thing disturbing. There is an assumption about spirituality that left little room for my own view on the subject. I do not have a spirit. No thing does. I had to add a comment that I consider all my pursuits earthly ones. Spirituality is of no concern to me and is a pseudonym for religion. I agreed to the longer survey and hope you will allow a person to clarify this distinction.

I agree. The survey left no

I agree. The survey left no room for how an atheist actually feels about real life.

To be totally honest, I'm not

To be totally honest, I'm not even sure I know what spirituality means. It is one of those words I think I know what it means until I try to explain it, then realize I don't. It seems to mean different things to different people, which makes it a pretty useless word (imo).

This has been a repeated

This has been a repeated conversation in my life :

What church do you go to ?

None. I am not religious.

Are you spiritual ?

No !

I took the quiz and found

I took the quiz and found myself similarly amused at how a quiz aimed towards atheists presumed we had a personal concept of the spiritual by not giving us an option to deny spirituality in full. That being said, I'm sure this is probably something that will come up during the interviews if one decided to agree to one.
