Alain - Grin does not explain

Alain - Grin does not explain why uranium release energy while most other minerals do not.

Most elements release energy when they undergo fission. Elements heavier than iron release net energy with fission.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Alain - What cause uranium to be unstable and why other minerals are not unstable?

All elements are unstable. Some have 1/2 lives of a fraction of a second, some have 1/2 lives of billions of years.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
What makes uranium noteworthy (to the above) is it is particularly "easy" to get uranium to undergo fission (but it is not the easiest), and it gives a lot of energy during this process (but not the most), and it is relatively cheap.

"What cause uranium to be

"What cause uranium to be unstable and why other minerals are not unstable?"

OK, I am not a scientist nor teacher, but I still read a lot, and I do try to review information, not only in science but in history, the arts, philosophy and personal experiences. So, this is a rough recollection of why uranium is unstable while other 'elements' are not.
Its not really hard to understand but its a pain to try and explain sensibly. Wish me luck. Its also a 'free' weekend so I have time to write.

Every material thing in this universe is made up of atoms, which are tiny points of energy. Atoms are arranged naturally to form Elements. All Elements were created in supernovas, exploding stars. It is true that we are all made from star stuff. Elements are mixed together in innumerable ways to create compounds and minerals and chemicals and everything else,in the universe, living or inert.
Protons, neutrons and electrons are the three main components of the atom. Protons and neutrons make up the nucleus of the atom, while electrons move around the nucleus like satellites around a planet.
Neutrons have no charge.
Protons have a positive charge and electrons have a negative charge and are attracted to each other and this attraction holds the atom together. These three particles are only a small part of the huge number of particles that pass through the fabric of our reality, but that's another story.

Atoms form Elements that range from the relatively simple and stable gas Hydrogen, through to the less familiar Element called Organeson. There are 118 Elements. Theoretically there are another hundred or so. The ones we can deal with are mapped out on the Periodic Table. Here's a link, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Periodic_table

All the Elements have what is called an atomic number which denotes how many protons are in the nucleus, which also generally equals the number of electrons. This equality between protons and electrons is the reason for an element's stability. Neutrons usually equal the number of protons too but its not unusual for elements to have more neutrons than protons in the nucleus and these elements are called isotopes and the extra protons give the element different properties, as if it were a different element altogether.
Sixty of the 118 Elements that have at least one radioactive isotope.
All elements with atomic numbers greater than 83, starting with Polonium, are radioactive, meaning the atom has an imbalance of protons and neutrons, which have been present since their creation in the supernova and in trying to regain stability it loses energy, hence the radioactivity, in most cases by shedding neutrons. Depending on the element and the excess of neutrons the attempt to regain stablilty can take milli-seconds or thousand of years.

Thats my rough explanation, I hope its worth something to you. Maybe the real scientists here will correct or improve on my faulty recollection.

edited - "not usual for elements to have more neutrons than protons" to "not unusual for elements to have more neutrons than protons"

I think Nyarlathotep posted

I think Nyarlathotep posted something about this. But in all actuality, all elements are unstable and radiate energy. Just that some are more unstable that others. Some, like those from Iron on down to Hydrogen, are highly stable, but still have some instability. You would need to delve into nuclear physics to know why. As Grinseed said, I also read a lot. However, nuclear physics was never something I studied heavily. My main foci were into geology, volcanology, climatology, astrophysics (not theoretical though I have had some).

Grinseed: RE: "Muslims don't have 'religious NDEs, :" Near-Death Experiences and Islam By Kevin R. Williams, B.Sc. *(NDE appears to be a human thing unrestricted by any one religion.) https://www.near-death.com/religion/islam.html

Near-Death Experiences
Joel Ibrahim Kreps, M.D.
Montreal, Canada (He sites this as a conclusion, however, goes on to discuss NDE )
" Once again the results were disappointing. I conclude that NDEs are specifically designed for people who need them, and the need in certain communities may not be as great because of the persistence of traditional faith in an afterlife and a Creator."....

"More than 20 years ago, when I was just barely aware of the work of
Raymond Moody (1975) delineating the characteristics of near-death
experiences (NDEs), I was on a journey to Cairo, when I was invited to
an Iftar dinner,"... "As I was listening to her exposition, I remember thinking, ‘‘This is an almost classical NDE.’’ This woman recounted her head-on collision with an oncoming car, leaving her body just before impact, and being carried upwards into...

I certainly agree that NDE appears to be more common in Christianity. I have read that this may be due to sanctions against "seeing the face of Muhammad." Christians expect to see Jesus upon their deaths. Muslims do not expect to behold the face of Muhammad. (Just my thinking.) I think there is plenty of evidence for Muslim NDEs.

Thanks Cog, That's what I

Thanks Cog, That's what I like about this forum, so much to learn.

Saleem looks like he was dealing with quite a guilt about how his treated his mother, so it may not be so surprising his thoughts turned to her and to his fear of punishment.

Usman ended up only wanting another shot at being a better muslim than he thought he was. HIs experience was closer to the usual christian one, with the light, the muffled voices, the angel. Seems his medical team used electric shocks to revive him.

As Dr Kreps said, NDEs might just be specifically designed for people who need them, in moments of extremis to resolve problems before they die, as these two probably thought they might.
I recall similar NDE stories reported decades ago from white Europeans and Americans, not necessarily religious, that involved the growing and diminishing point of light and shadows of people and muffled talking. That might be the default physical experience for NDE victims and all other issues religious or personal might depend on the person involved, but I'd be talking out of my arse right now, as I do from time to time.

Alain's picture
Let me see this point Grin in

Let me see this point Grin in which you say...............NDEs might just be specifically designed for people who need them, in moments of extremis to resolve problems before they die..................

Although I agree that NDE ...........might or are just specifically designed for people who need them..........I do not agree about the moments of extremis to resolve problems before they die.
If you would have read even some of these NDEs you would have noticed that people who had these NDEs live years and years after they had such an experience.

I'll say this again. NDEs

I'll say this again. NDEs are nothing but brain hallucinations caused by oxygen deprivation. I even had one when I was in a coma after the accident that killed my family. If you wish, read about it here: Soul Shatter Essays.

Alain's picture
1) Hallucinations come and go

1) Hallucinations come and go whereas NDEs stay a lifetime clear and sharp in the memory.
2) The fact that you didn't go through a real NDE is quite simple Arak.
NDEs are given when the recipient's mind is open to receive the message so he-she will put at good use such an experience.
Most atheists put a barrier in their mind that God is not there and in any case they are not interested so is quite obvious that they will never get a real NDE but there are exceptions where atheists got an NDE and now are strong theists.

arakish's picture
And you are wrong. I can

And you are wrong. I can remember many of the hallucinations I have had. Some over 45 years ago. The simple reason you cannot any hallucination you MAY have had is because you chose not to. Did you read any of my Soul Shatter Essays? Particular this one? Read them.

Alain: "Most atheists put a barrier in their mind that God is not there and in any case they are not interested so is quite obvious that they will never get a real NDE but there are exceptions where atheists got an NDE and now are strong theists."

And I have had one. Yet, I am still a strong atheist, anti-theist, and anti-religionist.

Now you are starting to

Now you are starting to shovel bullshit Alain. We are moving closer to a mutual understanding of NDE's, and now you inject "God and a message".

OK, since you have brought the "G" word into the conversation, prove god.

Alain's picture
1) NDEs point to God but of

1) NDEs point to God but of course to atheists wouldn't make any difference considering that they put a barrier between themselves and God.
At this stage evidence means nothing.

2) If you want to know God you need to be interested.
The same thing apply to a lover.
Love sprang out of deep interest for somebody else.
God is love.
Spiritual love that pervade the whole of you.
Not only atheists but most people are just not interested in this topic so it become impossible to establish interest at this stage.
Interest in God will come when people will get sick and tired of getting nowhere by chasing finite things.
At the end everybody will come to the conclusion that only the infinite will be the real MaCoy but it may take many many reincarnations before people will wake up and start thinking wisely.

Why do you believe in your god and not any of these thousands of now-dead gods? Could it be simply because of the circumstances of your birth? Does the absolute truth depend on where you are born?.

As Ricky Gervais said, “Tell me the reason why you do not believe in all the other gods that have existed, and you have just answered your question as to why I do not believe in your god.

You are just like all other Religious Absolutists. So full of bullshit you can't see or smell the bullshit you are throwing at everyone.

Alain, I'm not suggesting

Alain, I'm not suggesting anyone died. These were after all , "near" death experiences. Perhaps I should have written "...to resolve problems before they thought they were going to die..."
And I have read many different reports on NDEs going back decades. This is not a new phenomenon and not an unfamiliar area for me. Many, but not all, stories share common features, the light in the darkness, shadows of people, muffled voices, out of body experiences and the feeling of serenity. But none of this proves what they experienced as being anything other than a physical episode.

Alain's picture

Don't you think that a physical phenomenon is felt when the body is alive?

arakish's picture
Depends on whether the

Depends on whether the physical phenomenon is affecting my body. For instance, it is currently snowing where I am at. However, the snow is outside, I am inside. Thus, the physical phenomenon of snowing is not affecting my body.

Alain, just how near does one

Alain, just how near does one have to be to death for it to qualify as one of your NDEs? How is it measured? By inches? Seconds? Heartbeats? Brainwaves? Can one have a NNDE? Has anyone ever been whatever you consider near enough to death but not had the experiences you are talking about?

Alain's picture
I have no idea who invented

I have no idea who invented the word NDE.
If I had to give a name to these experiences I rather would have called them TSC (temporary separation of consciousness).
Once the consciousness separate from the body-brain the bloke is dead and when the consciousness return the bloke is alive again.
All other questions I already answered in other posts but if you are interested in the subject you can read in here.

@Alain

"I have no idea who invented the word NDE.
If I had to give a name to these experiences I rather would have called them TSC (temporary separation of consciousness)."

This is a very good example of your very muddy thinking attempting to define one thing as another.

A near death experience is something that can be defined and even measured. How close a body can come to death can be observed and measured.

The separation of consciousness is an abstract concept that has never been proven, nor can it be measured.

Alain, when someone comes very close to death, it is logical and sane to define it as a "near death experience", and nothing more.

Alain's picture
Sorry David but I do not

Sorry David but I do not agree because here we are dealing with real death as certified by real doctors in real hospitals witnessed by real people.
Near death is a different story.
Totally different.
Suppose I have an heart attack.
I almost die but I survive.
This is a near death not an NDE.
