Am I Just Retarded About the Coming of Christ?

This is from an email my mom sent me. Evidently she did not like the way I had dismantled my brother's argument when we had a recent discussion about my atheism. I, of course, corrected him by telling him I am a Rationalist who happens to think critically utilizing analysis, logic, deductive reasoning, and rationality. My brother responded, "That's your problem. You think too much." To which I responded, "And you think incorrectly." Afterwards, the discussion got heated from his end, and he eventually stormed out angry. Yet, no matter how he tried, he never got my goat, as the adage goes.

Thus, as my mom said, she went to the Pastor of her church. This is what he gave her to give to me.

Christ Promised

These are the verses where God promises the coming of Christ in the very first book of the Bible.

To Eve, Genesis 3:15
To Shem, Genesis 9:27
To Abraham, Genesis 12:1-3
To Isaac, Genesis 17:21
To Jacob, Genesis 28:14
To Judah, Genesis 49:10

I then copy-pasted the above and pulled the listed verses out, putting them below.

To Eve, Genesis 3:15 - And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.

To Shem, Genesis 9:27 - God shall enlarge Japheth, and he shall dwell in the tents of Shem; and Canaan shall be his servant.

To Abraham, Genesis 12:1-3 - Now the LORD had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father’s house, unto a land that I will shew thee: And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing: And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.

To Isaac, Genesis 17:21 - But my covenant will I establish with Isaac, which Sarah shall bear unto thee at this set time in the next year.

To Jacob, Genesis 28:14 - And thy seed shall be as the dust of the earth, and thou shalt spread abroad to the west, and to the east, and to the north, and to the south: and in thee and in thy seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed.

To Judah, Genesis 49:10 - The sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh come; and unto him shall the gathering of the people be.

I think I must be retarded. I see absolutely no promise of the Coming of Christ in any of these verses. Perhaps we need to do like I heard about in the Qu'ran: You have to include the verse before and after the specific verse...

Here are the specific verses including the verse before and the verse after:

To Eve, Genesis 3:15 - {3:14} And the LORD God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life: {3:15} And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel. {3:16} Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.

To Shem, Genesis 9:27 - {9:26} And he said, Blessed be the LORD God of Shem; and Canaan shall be his servant. {9:27} God shall enlarge Japheth, and he shall dwell in the tents of Shem; and Canaan shall be his servant. {9:28} And Noah lived after the flood three hundred and
fifty years.

To Abraham, Genesis 12:1-3 - {11:32} And the days of Terah were two hundred and five years: and Terah died in Haran. {12:1} Now the LORD had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father’s house, unto a land that I will shew thee: {12:2} And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing: {12:3} And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed. {12:4} So Abram departed, as the LORD had spoken unto him; and Lot went with him: and Abram was seventy and five years old when he departed out of Haran.

To Isaac, Genesis 17:21 - {17:20} And as for Ishmael, I have heard thee: Behold, I have blessed him, and will make him fruitful, and will multiply him exceedingly; twelve princes shall he beget, and I will make him a great nation. {17:21} But my covenant will I establish with Isaac, which Sarah shall bear unto thee at this set time in the next year. {17:22} And he left off talking with him, and God went up from Abraham. {17:23} And Abraham took Ishmael his son, and all that were born in his house, and all that were bought with his money, every male among the men of Abraham’s house; and circumcised the flesh of their foreskin in the selfsame day, as God had said unto him.

To Jacob, Genesis 28:14 - {28:13} And, behold, the LORD stood above it, and said, I am the LORD God of Abraham thy father, and the God of Isaac: the land whereon thou liest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed; {28:14} And thy seed shall be as the dust of the earth, and thou shalt spread abroad to the west, and to the east, and to the north, and to the south: and in thee and in thy seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed. {28:15} And, behold, I am with thee, and will keep thee in all places whither thou goest, and will bring thee again into this land; for I will not leave thee, until I have done that which I have spoken to thee of.

To Judah, Genesis 49:10 - {49:9} Judah is a lion’s whelp: from the prey, my son, thou art gone up: he stooped down, he couched as a lion, and as an old lion; who shall rouse him up? {49:10} The sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh come; and unto him shall the gathering of the people be. {49:11} Binding his foal unto the vine, and his ass’s colt unto the choice vine; he washed his garments in wine, and his clothes in the blood of grapes:

Damn. I have to be retarded. Or do I need to get a pair of those God Glasses I heard some apologetic Absolutist talk about?

I still see no promise of the Coming of Christ.

Any help? Or, should I just say, "To Hell with it," and tell my mom I don't see it.

Hell, I don't even see Isaiah 7:14 as being a prophecy of the Coming of Christ. Reason: I have seen an ancient Greek bible translated from the Aramaic when my wife and I went to Greece to visit her grandparents. We also visited a museum that had such a bible displayed in a case. I even asked permission of the curator's if I could see Isaiah 7:14. I made a hand written copy of that verse. AND, this is how I know that "virgin" was NEVER in the original scriptures. The term actually translates as "young woman."

No you are not mad or

No you are not mad or retarded. Ive never been able to find these prophecies either, but then I read an understand english not wishful thinking.

"virgin" Then as now any young unmarried female was considered 'virgin' as the penalty for fornication/adultery was public flogging followed stoning to death just as it is now in many countries. Accused of not being 'virgin' on your wedding night was punished in the same way. Public stoning...yay.
The terms 'virgin' and 'young woman' therefore were synonyms in common usage (Aramaic and Koine).
In classical Greek not so, they were specific.

For a prediction to be

For a prediction to be established as true, it must be falsifiable.

arakish,

arakish,

"Christ" is just a title for the Jewish messiah. So unless one is a Jew it's irrelevant if he came, is coming, or will come.

"Christ (n.)

"the Anointed," synonymous with and translating to Greek Hebrew mashiah (see messiah), a title given to Jesus of Nazareth; Old English crist (by 830, perhaps 675), from Latin Christus, from Greek khristos "the anointed," noun use of verbal adjective of khriein "to rub, anoint" (from PIE root *ghrei- "to rub").

In the primitive Church it was a title, and used with the definite article, but from an early period it was used without it and regarded as part of the proper name of Jesus. It was treated as a proper name in Old English, but not regularly capitalized until 17c. Pronunciation with long -i- is result of Irish missionary work in England, 7c.-8c. The ch- form, regular since c. 1500 in English, was rare before. Capitalization of the word begins 14c. but is not fixed until 17c. The Latin term drove out Old English Hæland "healer, savior," as the preferred descriptive term for Jesus."

The only one I know is ....

The only one I know is ....
"31So also, when you see these things taking place, you will know that the kingdom of God is near. 32Truly I tell you, this generation will not pass away until all these things have happened. 33Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will never pass away.…"

Well, that was some 2000 years ago, a couple generations, and here we are still waiting. Can we fit 50 generations into that? I think so. All we can conclude is that Jesus is a liar.

It's going to get cluttered

It's going to get cluttered when all of those stars fall to Earth.

Matthew 24:29 (CEB) = "[ Coming of the Human One ] “Now immediately after the suffering of that time the sun will become dark, and the moon won’t give its light. The stars will fall from the sky and the planets and other heavenly bodies will be shaken."

If you are retarded, then

If you are retarded, then join the most respected Bible scholars the world over! They don't see Jesus in the Old Testament either. It was the New Testament authors that tried to see things in the Old Testament that just were not there. A silly doctrine arose, that there were two meanings to these Old Testament passages, one meaning applying to those times and a second meaning applying to Jesus. The Old Testament authors would have turned over in their graves if they knew that would happen!

Thanks guys.

Thanks guys.

I guess I am just a normal person who only reads and understands English, like Old man said.

I have never understood how anyone can see any prophecy in the Bible. I read the same passages and see something totally different. I guess I would need a pair of those God Glasses...

You should try a pair of those 3-D glasses like they give you at the movie theater. Doesn't really change the story, but they DO make the words look like they are coming right at you! LOL
