Atheist communities in US?

Do any of you know of cities in the US that have a decent Atheist population?

I have moved around a bit in California and lived in Sweden for a year so I have been able to compare communities in terms of level of religious inhabitants. When I was in Northern Caliornia, near Eureka, I never heard religious jargon or even saw many churches when I think about it now... It was easy for me to never think about God or religion ! Didn't hear much about it in Sweden or Los Angeles either.

I am living in Southern California now though in a community where there is a church on every corner and community gatherings start off with a prayer even if it is not a religiously affiliated group. Living in this community is actually what has perked up my interest in Atheism and concepts of God.

I am interested to know where Atheists are located though.

I have always wondered the

I have always wondered the kind of witch hunts that people would go on if anyone actually created locations for athiests to gather. I can't imagine several bible belt states allowing forsuch places to even exists within their borders.

I guess it would be a great thing to see that kind of things happening all over the unitd states eventually, but I woudlnt count on that happening anytime soon in most states. Unless you go to california and a few other places with plenty of open minded people.

Here is a wikipedia report

Here is a wikipedia report about the reports of people who claim to believed in God around the world. The United States is far from having people claim they do not believe in god, 9 out of 10 people in the Gallup survey claimed they believed in a god. Wow, that is a lot. Obviously Europe is much less religiously affiliated. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demographics_of_atheism

Here is a map of how

Here is a map of how religious each state is. Looks like the South is not the place to be for Atheists! http://www.patheos.com/blogs/friendlyatheist/2009/01/30/top-10-mostleast...

Also here's an article about the most religious US cities vs least religious. http://www.krmg.com/news/news/local/study-reveals-most-and-least-religio... Most religious: Provo-Orem, Utah (77%); Montgomery, Alabama (64); Jackson, Mississippi (64); Birmingham, Alabama (56); tied at 55 are Huntsville, Alabama; Holland, Michigan; Greenville, South Carolina; Augusta, Georgia; and Ogden, Utah.

Least religious: Burlington, Vermont, (17); Boulder, Colorado (17); Manchester, New Hampshire (22); Portland, Maine (22); and Santa Rosa, California (23).

The south is definitely the

The south is definitely the worst place for athiests, but the entire USA is still a terrible place for atheists. I guess San Francisco could be one of the few places that an atheist could live without fearing a mob with torches will come to their home and burn them alive inside it.

Try getting some atheists to establish a community in Alabama and you will watch the news at night about how the place accidentaly caught on fire. I mean come on, we all know that regardless of how much we think humanity has evolved, it really has a long way to go before things like this are seen as normal and tolerable as they should.

The good news is we don't

The good news is we don't have to establish any communities (physically). We don't have to pitch our tents in hostile territory...yet. We can continue to use the tools at our disposal to help people better understand our cause and show them they have nothing to fear from us. Could be there are a few southerners that would be open-minded.
