The most ignorant thing anybody has said to you

The other day when I was at church, the local preacher said that there is no such thing as atheism, since every atheist he knew was doubtful, regretful and unhappy about their decision their entire lives and always thought about religion, but I for one can say that there is nothing further from the truth from my point of view. Becoming an atheist was probably the happiest decision I've ever made and even though I often think of religion, it doesn't mean that I believe in it.

What was the most ignorant thing a religious person ever said to you?

I think being an atheist

I think being an atheist makes religion all the more enjoyable. The most ignorant thing I think I have heard is the term "God will make everything better if you just pray!". With all the people praying out there you would think the world would be pretty darn near perfect if that were true.

So you are borned with a demon inside you then ? You know like... if they are homosexual or not is actually decided once you are in your mothers belly. Its something you are borned as, but you will not notice it untill you reach a certain age. And you should respect the homosexuals for being who they are, they didnt choose it themselves. They are as much important as everyone

I hear you Paul. It makes me

I hear you Paul. It makes me so sad that the general view of Atheism is being empty inside and having no passion! I really feel that is so far from the truth. I have met so many passionate people who have let go of the concept of God and are wonderful people.

As for the most ignorant statement I will have to get back to you.. I know something will come to my mind because I have gone through some pretty ignorant conversations.

I was describing to somebody

I was describing to somebody once about what a 'fundamentalist' was. I told him to imagine that scientists and other scholars have successfully attained proof that there is no omnipotent creator, that the theory of design is indeed false. Now, if those very scientists and scholars came to you personally, and gave you an in depth analysis on there findings and why they are true, would you change your beliefs?? He very sincerely told me "no".. Look, im not trying to infringe on others beliefs, or convert them, but if this was the perfect world i just described, and we really had tangible evidence of there not being a 'GOD', why on earth would you continue lying to yourself??! ... You sir, are being a fundamentalist, and why would tarnish another generation with your religious upbringing when the moral zeitgeist has moved on without you? Have fun with your faith!!

You cant spell fundamental

You cant spell fundamental without mental coincidence? :)

Thats usually the other way

Thats usually the other way round. All religious people were either raised that way (brainwashed) or had something bad happen so they needed a divine power to help.

Mythlover's picture
And they need that divine

And they need that divine power to help because they need to feel a part of something bigger, so their bad thing becomes less and they can get past it. Helps some people, but just shows that religion is a lot like believing in Santa Clause, it makes you feel good to believe in because as long as you are good this time, you'll get presents. It is just not true.

I have heard this said to me. I usually get very very upset and want to hurt them because they are treating you like a wounded animal as if you need help.

I'm sorry it bothers you that

I'm sorry it bothers you that much; I usually just laugh it off (internally, that is) when I do hear this. One of the reasons I decided to be an atheist is that I think people tend to worry WAY too much over the existence of a god, etc. Since I stopped believing, I figured there were many more important issues to worry about. If the religious fundies want to worry about it and give themselves ulcers, fine. I just try not to take it personally :)

Oh, I've got a good one!

Oh, I've got a good one!

When I was debating with my-very-Catholic father over religion, after I effectively shot down every bit of 'evidence' he used, he finally shouted "But why can't you just BELIEVE?!"

If he wasn't so serious about it, I probably would've laughed in his face. Wasn't that what we were just debating over?
