Views on revenge

Hi all,

I am an atheist and recently have been debating on tots of revenge and on how does one overcome their need for justification.

We do not believe in god or karma and so what happens when someone does you wrong and has escaped law? Example someone raped your love one etc..

How do an Atheist control his thoughts on exacting his needs for justification, revenge?

Regards,
Hotdog

Hawtdog! We're not always

Hawtdog! We're not always served justice by the law sometimes things happen that the law utterly fails to make right and even in cases where the law does pull through to work the way it's supposed to it often fails to deliver adequate justice.

There may come a time when you will face a desire to make things right fully knowing the consequences of doing what ever you decide to do you must think it out and make your own decision to act or not act on your feelings. After fully thinking everything out. How do you plan to do what your going to(don't answer here just think of the answer), if and when you get caught how do you plan to act, you must weigh the consequences and decide your willing to pay them in a worse case scenario. this all must be thought over before you decide to act. Anything less than that after the fact can be considered a luckiness of sorts.

When a loved one has been through for example your example and you know it for a fact, you know who did it and you know they got away with it, the fact of the matter is they haven't because you know what they did, but it is best to keep as few people involved in what you decide to do about it as possible. If you decide to defend someone else's honor though, it is best that they are involved, after all it's more about them than it is about you. Can you pull this off are there ways to get revenge without getting in trouble? I live in a place where it is often times better to deal with things on your own than to get the police involved, so I can sympathize with what you may be trying to debate here. Chances are in the future a jury will have some sympathy if they hear the whole story later too, But nobody said it is easy to exact revenge nobody said there would be no price to pay. Sometimes it worth paying the price. If after thinking this all out you decide its not worth it though though you have to move on and ultimately in time your vengeful thoughts will fade if you decide to take this route.

Atheists believe in the rule

Atheists believe in the rule of law...If someone does a crime he has to do the time....My advice would be to report anyone breaking the law to the proper authorities...Then you will know that you did your part and be proud......

I don't believe in the rule

I don't believe in the rule of law. I think the law is fucked up. It doesn't teach us anything, it doesn't prevent anything, and it very very rarely serves justice. We're not kids, we don't need a set of rules, a list of things we're not allowed to do, but a list of reasons why not to do certain things.
.. Most crimes we think of today aren't actually crimes against humanity or anything like that, the criminal positions are created through the system, paid criminal positions. Is someone just trying to survive ever really a criminal?

Free nice sentiment if the system worked.
I have to agree with zaphoid. Think through all ramifications, talk to the wronged party (if possible) they may not want you to do anything.
Do attempt to get a legal form of justice first if theres any possible way.
Then if you must go through with it attempt to plan a way to avoid penalties while accepting you may fail and have to pay the penalty.
