I think you're OK with race from what I've seen.

I was raised in a relatively homogeneous society. For a start, we were taught Aborigines were a dying race,so we ignored them. Didn't even include them in the census until 1963.

Then there was the White Australia Policy, which was law until 1975. In practice that meant we only liked people like us; anglo-celt. Italians and Greeks were grudgingly admitted in the 1950's due to a severe labour shortage. Also Brits, who were widely detested on their own merits. They were known as 'whinging Poms'***

Today Australians speak over 200 languages and is officially 'multi-cultural' .However, Aussies have always had some group to hate. In the 1980's it was the Vietnamese refugees in particular, but Asians in general. Today the bogeyman is the Muslims.

ME? I must admit that I still have racist feelings, for which I am ashamed. I can't control the way I feel, but I can control the way I behave.

*** In the 1950's Australia had an assisted immigration system for [white] Brits . They paid 10 pounds sterling for their boat passage on a standard passenger liner. In return they had to remain in Australia for 2 years. Otherwise the cost of their passage became a debt. Many complained about how much better things were in England. This went down like a lead balloon with most Aussies..

**2005 Cronulla Race riots, Sydney:

"The 2005 Cronulla riots was a civil conflict starting in the beachside suburb of Cronulla in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, which spread over the next few nights to additional suburbs.

The riots were triggered by an event the previous Sunday, after an altercation which turned physical between a group of youths of Middle-Eastern appearance (referred to as "Lebanese" or "Lebos" by their opponents) and Anglo-Australian lifeguards on the beach. Following the reporting of this event by the tabloid media and "shock jocks" on local radio, a racially motivated gathering was organised for the following weekend."
