Growing up, I thought God was shorthand for I don't really understand how the world was made. Or at the very least I don't really feel like telling you why you should or shouldn't do something "God said to"or "God said not to". By this virtue would God not be closely related to lack of understanding then?

No one in my house growing up ever tried to cop out of an answer, I'm at least thankful for that much. But thinking of God as "the great unknown" isn't really that esoteric for most people.
