Hollywood Actress Julianne Moore Reveals She Is an Atheist

Julianne Moore

Actress Julianne Moore recently revealed that she does not believe in God and feels that, apart from some luck, she has created her own life. During her interview with “Hollywood Reporter”, 54-year-old Moore said that her mother’s death in 2009 led her to abandon her faith in God, as she learned that  humans impose structure in society as a desperate attempt to make sense of it all.

“I learned when my mother died five years ago that there is no ‘there’ there,” Moore said. “Structure, it’s all imposed. We impose order and narrative on everything in order to understand it. Otherwise, there’s nothing but chaos.”

According to Moore, people alone determine their own paths and craft out the lives they want for themselves.

“The idea that you’re the center of your own narrative and that you can create your life is a great idea,” Moore said. “I totally believe it. I’ve been really lucky, but I feel I’ve completely created my own life.”

As the daughter of an army dad, who served as a helicopter pilot as well as a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Division, the actress said she was privileged enough to travel a lot during her childhood – an experience that she claims made her as adaptable as she is today.

In 2002, also, Moore made certain comments that led some to dub her a non-believer. On “Inside the Actor’s Studio,” when she was asked what she would want God to say to her at the pearly gates of Heaven, Moore reportedly responded saying, “Well I guess you were wrong. I do exist!”
