Georgia: Elderly Woman Expelled From Church for Failing to Tithe

Josephine King

An elderly woman in Georgia is no longer allowed to attend services at her church, where she was a member for over 50 years, after she was unable to tithe.

Josephine King, 92, shared with the media her sense of devastation after receiving a letter from First African Baptist Church of Bainbridge that informed her that she was no longer welcome there.

Her family expressed disappointment with the church’s decision to expel King from the congregation. They also said that they were sharing the incident with the media so that Americans are aware of the true dynamics operating within religious congregations.

“Josephine King is no longer considered a member of the First African Baptist Church of Bainbridge, Georgia,” read Gerald Simmons, as he skimmed over the letter addressed to his aunt.

The letter, signed by Derrick Mike, senior pastor at First African Baptist Church of Bainbridge, detailed how King had failed to show adequate support for the church by refusing consistent and constant financial as well as physical participation.

“She was stunned. She was disappointed. She was shocked,” said Simmons.

Simmons explained that King had fallen very ill over the last couple of months, which is why she may have had a certain lack of attendance at church. He also said that in the past, King had gone above and beyond to support the church financially.

“You shouldn't chase the individuals down,” said Simmons. “You shouldn't do that. If that's the case, you're money hungry.”

Additionally, Simmons divulged that his aunt was not the only person to receive such a letter after being unable to tithe.

“You have to have money to make these churches run, but it's not about money,” Simmons said. “It's about God. You have to put God first.”

When the church was asked for a clarification, it refused to opine on the matter or defend itself.
