Indian Muslim Couple 'Beaten to Death' Over Son's Romantic Relationship

A 50-year-old Indian Muslim man and his wife in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh (UP) were reportedly beaten to death with iron rods and sticks by their neighbors on August 18 over their son’s alleged affair with their neighbor’s daughter, who belonged to a different faith.

The crime occurred in the village of Rajeypur in Sitapur. According to Sitapur Superintendent of Police (SP) Chakresh Mishra, the couple, identified as Abbas Ali and Kamrul Nisha, were killed on the spot after five people brutally attacked them over their son’s alleged relationship.

So far, authorities have arrested three people – Shailendra Jaiswal, Pallu, and Amarnath – in connection to the murder case. The First Information Report (FIR), which was filed based on a complaint by the couple’s daughter, stated that the incident occurred around 4:30 PM on August 18th. The suspects are accused of violating Sections 147 (punishment for rioting), 148 (rioting, armed with deadly weapon), 149 (unlawful assembly), and 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

SP Chakresh Mishra said that in 2020, Abbas' son Shaukat eloped with their neighbor’s daughter, who was then a minor. A report was filed to the authorities, and Shaukat was imprisoned for almost three years until his release on August 16th.

Although the woman’s family already got her married to someone else, the dispute between Shaukat’s and the woman’s families was revived after his release.

"The girl eloped from her husband's house and got married to Shaukat. Another FIR was filed against him in April 2023. However, the girl was an adult by then and told the court that she wanted to live with Shaukat," Mishra said.

A five-member gang, including the woman’s father, went to speak with Abbas Ali and Kamrul Nisha, asking them to keep Shaukat away from their daughter. A heated argument soon ensued between the two families, and the accused started beating the other family with sticks and iron rods. The couple died on the spot.

"The accused came to my house and started beating my mother and father with the intention of killing them. When I raised alarm, no one came to save me. They tried to kill us too, but I ran away, while the body of my parents was lying in the house," the FIR said.

Police personnel have been deployed in the village, and SP Mishra reached the crime scene following the incident. Although the three main accused were already arrested, authorities are still searching for the two others. The Hargaon Police is currently conducting an investigation into the crime.
