I mock almost everything, why

I mock almost everything, why should religion get a pass?

Sometimes, mockery doesn't

Sometimes, mockery doesn't help. Especially when you are aiming to set understanding to people.

I agree, the first option is

I agree, the first option is always to understand the person.

Mockery is when reason fails.

"Sometimes, mockery doesn't help."
Emphasis on the "Sometimes"

"If one could reason with a theist, there won't be any more theists."

Most of the religious people

Most of the religious people I talk to aren't actually interested in UNDERSTANDING me, they want me to UNDERSTAND them and change to be like them. That is the problem though, I used to BE them, I understand them so well it is nearly physically painful to watch them. Also, it must be said, some religious beliefs DESERVE to be ridiculed. There are people where I live that actually BELIEVE that people lived with dinosaurs, and that dinosaurs were vegans, so...

You really, REALLY, can't reason people out of a position they hold without reason, and in many cases, against ALL reason.

I am of the opinion that

I am of the opinion that people generally don't change. But the urge to conform to the group is a powerful urge, and public ridicule is one of the few methods that has a possibility of changing someone. Not the most popular view I know. So pile some ridicule on and maybe I'll abandon this view point!

I think it can be useful in

I think it can be useful in the right setting. Depending on the personalities, some mockery can be effective to bystanders and pedestrians when used confronting street preachers. Here is a video of presuppositionalist Sye Ten Bruggencate doing his “How do you know?” routine and a Navy seal uses his keys and gravity to debunk Bruggencate’s ridiculous assertion: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bcwfvZHYQJE

The confrontation of this

The confrontation of this street preacher is a bit more explicit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iIdvRPq37FU

The mocking section only extends to 2:50. A guy In a dog suit found a imaginative way to mock a street preacher. Opinions may vary on the effectiveness of the humor.

That is horrible, I'm pretty

That is horrible, I'm pretty sure I would have done worse mocking then that.

Can't he find some real mockery?

Even a sign which says "In God we trust" and then an atheist with an other sign finishing the sentence as "for mass destruction." would have done a better mockery.

Why should we mock people

Why should we mock people that believe stupid and immoral things?

hmm.... hard question. :)

Imagine what would happen if people believed false things(we don't need it to be immoral).

Imagine that most people do not believe in empty plane fuel tanks.

After some plane crashes those believers will come with an apologetic that it was not the fault of the empty fuel tanks, but something else.
Do we need to mock these people to make them see reason?
The answer is obvious.

So after we see religion be used as a mind control tool, by people in power to commit:
Crusades
Suicide bombers
Ethnic cleansing
Inquisition
Systematic fucking of children
Burning witches
etc...... trust me the list goes on....

After some time those same believers will come with apologetics that it was not the fault of Religion, but something else.
Do we need to mock those people to make them see reason?
The answer is obvious.

Religion is the VERY FIRST weapon of mass destruction; Mind Control.

Religion is the only mind control weapon humans haven't banned yet, simply because too many people are infected by it.
Mockery is a possible way to heal those infected people.

Mocking the ridiculous and

Mocking the ridiculous and intolerable is often the only useful fulcrum of change.

Kean, I don't know that we

Kean, I don't know that we 'should' do anything. Rather, we 'could'; mockery is one of a multitude of options. I find mockery to be a harmful behavior, and of little use to creating meaningful dialogue.

But then, meaningful dialogue isn't always the goal. Sometimes, self-soothing is the goal. Enter mockery, and other forms of ad-hominem attacks.

Used sparingly and wisely to

Used sparingly and wisely to point out absurdities and contradictions, mocking can be quite powerful. I can't deny that such played a role in my de-conversion. However, continuous, cruel and hateful mockery that ridicules sincere and well meaning people is something I consider ugly. It also encourages some believers to stand even more strongly in their faith and feel more justified.

I think it is a good tool to

I think it is a good tool to use on a large scale, like Bill Maher and other comedians do. To show that it's no longer taboo to criticize ridiculous beliefs.

It's very telling when you are not allowed to criticize or say anything against some form of dogma, like religion, politics, a dictator, etc. They get angry because they are afraid. They are afraid because on some level, they know that it's not true or that it can't hold up against scrutiny. Even though they want it to be true or need it to be true.

If their religion was true, if the believer actually did believe without doubt, I don't think they would get angry at all. They would feel secure in their faith and confident that god can handle things by himself. After all, why would a god, the omnipotent creator of the universe, constantly need help? At most they would feel the urge to warn, "You really shouldn't mock him, or you will end up paying for it."

The more angry believers get when their god/religion is criticized, the less secure they are in their faith.
Or...
The more angry "false" believers get when their god/religion is criticized, the more afraid they are to lose their power/status/wealth.

Under normal circumstances it should be okay to mock just about anything. But depending on the situation, it can end up just being disrespectful, damaging or just show really bad taste.

What is wrong with mocking

What is wrong with mocking religion? People mock atheism. The difference is that theists get angered when we mock their baseless beliefs (I say baseless because the bible is no proof of anything other than indoctrination was possible back then), but I don't get angry when people mock me on my disbelief. What is there to mock? "Haha you don't believe in God!"
"...Ok?"

It's been years since I

It's been years since I watched the show, but I used to like the restrained mocking in The Simpsons. It showed church goers as a mixed bag between the sincere and devout and those who just felt they were supposed to go or who went out of habit. The pastor was burned out and cynical and as irritated by the zealous (Ned Flanders) as he was by those who slept through his sermons (Homer). I also liked the little jabs, like the one I remember when the Reverend asks God for a miracle, looks up into the sky, pauses, then sighs and says "fine, we'll just do it ourselves...again". Little mocking jabs like that actually had an impact on me when I was a believer. Huge scale attacks on Christianity however with the clear intent to offend, just made me turn the TV off.
