Catholic Priesthood vs Homosexuality

Well, it would appear that the catholic church, in its desire to clean up its act, has formally banned homosexuality from entrance into seminary. Excerpted from the latest revision (12/8/2016) of church's The Gift of the Priestly Vocation, homosexuality is addressed and flatly barred. Furthermore, it goes on to describe any cloaking of homosexuality for reasons of gaining entry to the priesthood "gravely dishonest".

------------------------------------

"c) Persons with Homosexual Tendencies

199. In relation to persons with homosexual tendencies who seek admission to Seminary, or discover such a situation in the course of formation, consistent with her own Magisterium304, "the Church, while profoundly respecting the persons in question, cannot admit to the seminary or to holy orders those who practise homosexuality, present deep-seated homosexual tendencies or support the so-called gay culture'. Such persons, in fact, find themselves in a situation that gravely hinders them from relating correctly to men and women. One must in no way overlook the negative consequences that can derive from the ordination of persons with deep-seated homosexual tendencies"305.

200. "Different, however, would be the case in which one were dealing with homosexual tendencies that were only the expression of a transitory problem — for example, that of an adolescence not yet superseded. Nevertheless, such tendencies must be clearly overcome at least three years before ordination to the diaconate"306.

Moreover, it must be remembered that, in a relationship of sincere dialogue and mutual trust, the seminarian is obliged to reveal to his formators — to the Bishop, the Rector, the Spiritual Director and to other formators — doubts or difficulties he should have in this regard.

In this context, "If a candidate practises homosexuality or presents deep-seated homosexual tendencies, his spiritual director as well as his confessor have the duty to dissuade him in conscience from proceeding towards ordination". In any case, "It would be gravely dishonest for a candidate to hide his own homosexuality in order to proceed, despite everything, towards ordination. Such a deceitful attitude does not correspond to the spirit of truth, loyalty and openness that must characterize the personality of him who believes he is called to serve Christ and his Church in the ministerial priesthood"307."

-------------------------------------------

So, do we expect the church to rigidly enforce this, or is this simply a ruse to satisfy the general public that their children will be safe from predation?

It's not homosexuals that

It's not homosexuals that they need to ban. It's pedophiles, whether homo- or heterosexual.

It's interesting that they

It's interesting that they have used their systemic child abuse problem, as a platform to attack homosexuality. Sneaky!

It would be better if they

It would be better if they would simply allow local law enforcement to prosecute pedophiles. Stop acting like they are a higher law.
