We don't have famous bee-keeping mountain climbers. We don't even have any real mountains. We do have bees though. Mean nasty little black ones, savage stingers, that produce a stingy amount of honey because we don't have any large flowers due to very limited natural resources, mostly because we don't have any real mountains which are necessary for producing weathered soil etc to grow big flowers to make sweet honey. You Kiwis got the lot, beekeepers and mountains.
But we did keep Lizzie on the five dollar note as miserable compensation. You just probably don't recognise her because well, have a look at the pic. Doesn't she look a little tired or old? She's going to abdicate in favour of Charlie soon and then we will all have to design new bills to feature his mug.

Most Aussie bees don't sting. We are not allowed to keep them in WA as all our native bees are stingless and solitary, but we do have a couple of species that like to nest in old screw/bolt holes in wood, lawnmower, hose reel. and they kindalike to hang around people .....Lots of people keep the Black bee over east as it is an excellent neighbour and brilliant pollinator.
I apologise to all native bees in Oz...I really thought they were stingers. My parents used to have bee hives in the backyard in Bankstown when I was very young. I got stung quite a few times...ok I confess, so I dislike bees.
I do like the solitary black and orange wasps though. They never stung me once when stealing the clay from my pottery shed.
