Please help us understand what about atheism you think makes it a religion?

Religion: a cause, principle,

Religion: a cause, principle, or system of beliefs held to with ardor and faith. A worldview. A Christian has a set of beliefs , in the same way an atheist has a set of beliefs.

@AJ777

I view the religion of atheism/naturalism to be a failure in logic and contrary to reality. The nature of truth only allows for one true religion.

I am going to go out on a limb here and take a guess that the one "true religion" is.... *drum roll* the religion you believe in!!! And all the other religions and variations of are a little to a lot wrong. All other ~100 billion people that lived and died or still alive got it at least partly wrong, but miracle of all miracles you found the correct religion! HURRAH!

A Christian has a set of beliefs , in the same way an atheist has a set of beliefs.

I have yet to find another atheist that agreed with me on all things in my personal belief. We do not have a "book" that we all read and agree upon. Just like how a: "not a stamp collector" is only similar with other "not a stamp collectors" only in that we do not collect stamps. You are going to find it real hard to find a particular unifying belief system of not stamp collectors beyond the simple fact they do not collect stamps.

I get you want to label us all under one tag of beliefs, so you can more easily dismiss us, just like you dismiss all other religion ideas as false and yours correct, but sorry does not work that way, instead you only embarrassed yourself with your lack of understanding.

AJ777 " in the same way an atheist has a set of beliefs."

That doesn't make atheism a set of beliefs, and no one said an atheist can't be religious. You claimed atheism was a religion, and that is a lie.

Atheism
noun
disbelief or lack of belief in the existence of God or gods.

I suspect you are again lying in order to troll, at least I hope you are anyway.

Lots of christians rape children, does that mean christianity is paedophilia? Come on now, nothing will convince me you're too stupid to see that atheist and atheism is not the same thing.

Now you claimed that in your opinion torturing children was immoral, why do you think it is immoral?

The set of atheist beliefs.

The set of atheist beliefs.
1. Atheists do not believe in god or gods.

Care to enlighten us? Atheism is generally a reaction to Theist claims that god's exist.. Nothing more. What are these claims you assert atheists are making? There is no atheist world view. At\heists are liberals and conservatives. Atheists are secularists, Buddhists, New Ageists, Spiritualists and more... Where is this belief system you speak of?

Atheism isn't a set of

Atheism isn't a set of beliefs it's the absence of one single belief.

Thus atheism is not, and cannot be a religion.

Are you'd really this stupid?

Why is it immoral to torture children? Do you really not know?

Sheldon's picture
I view your opinion as biased

I view your opinion as biased nonsense, based on your own superstitious beliefs, and the innate prejudice it fosters against those who don't share it. The arrogance of all religions is that they make this claim to be uniquely true whilst offering no credible or objective reason or evidence for the claim, but atheism isn't a claim, an assertion or a belief, so your assertions about atheism and religion not only don't reflect reality and truth, they are a risible specious contradiction of what the words atheism and religion mean. It's bizarre enough you theists don't read dictionaries yourself, but it is absurd for you to think we won't notice that your claims are duplicitous contradictions of the dictionary.

The nature of truth is that all claims and beliefs are subject to the same objective standards of evidence, and you can demonstrate no more for yours than any of the others including Zeus, Thor and Apollo. Don't pretend otherwise as we asked you for your best piece of objective evidence and you used an archaic deeply flawed first cause argument that even were it not preposterous would no more evidence Jesus than Macuilcozcacuauhtli the Aztec deity of gluttony.

No it is not. It is part of the definition.

Are you really sure English is your primary language? Because you just do not seem to be able to even grasp the concept of simple definitions.

AJ77 this IS an assertion about what atheism is!"

Wrong again Bullwinkle, that was an assertion about what atheism is not. Can your grasp of English really be this poor?

Now your assertion that it's immoral to torture children was a subjective claim about what morality requires. Which is directly at odds with your claim it is objective, and therefore is independently true without subjective opinion.

Care to Tell us why you think torturing children is immoral? Or are you still embarrassing yourself with evasion as you've noticed the pit you've dug yourself into.

It's always fun to talk morality with arrogant theists who have no idea what it means.

"The nature of truth only allows for one true religion."

OK, we are making progress. If what you said is true then all other religions beside the one you claim in true are false and therefore evil. So you just answered most of your original question. Religions are evil because they are not true.

Now, please reveal which religion it is that you claim to be true.

Then you have a failure in reason that should be quite troubling to you...believing in something for no reason. You also Can not claim christianity with all its tenets without proof, no matter how you state it.

Which Christianity is true? Mormon, JW, Catholicism, Pentecostal, Calvinist, .....? 30 thousand different sects all calling the other sects false can not all be true? They can all be false. Please tell us which one you are and how you ruled all the others out.

So you believe in a religion that was started by a lying killer terrorist thief who suffered from delusions and preached about how belief in a Jewish zombie with help you achieve eternal life. OK.

That sounds like an evil religion to me.

That imbecilic word play doesn't change the fact that atheism is not a belief but the lack of a belief in a deity or deities, nor is it a set of beliefs, and therefore not a religion, as you idiotically tried to claim.

Cognostic's picture
Yes! You are confusing

Yes! You are confusing absolute knowledge with what is reasonable. It's your religious black and white bullshit all or nothing thinking effecting your ability to reason intelligently. Woulden't if be nice if we could disprove the existence of that crazed madman and his lust for gold as he sailed the coasts of the new world chopping off the hands of the "indians" infecting them with disease and forcing them into the Christian faith at the point of a sword. Christopher is your kind of man. Why in the name of your murderous God would you want to disprove good ole loving Christopher? Your question is so ignorant as to be completely foolish. There are thousands of records attesting to the existence of CC and all the damage he did. I know my own great grandfather was real to a less degree than CC. There is more evidence for CC.

Belief is not an all or nothing proposition. Belief is apportioned according to the evidence.

Jesus is dead. Jesus lives.

Everything was created by god except god.

We have free will, but god knows everything that we think and do, now and in the future.

Only Christianity is true, but Hinduism and Islam are also true.

AJ777's picture

Jesus died, and was resurrected: not a violation of the law of non contradiction.
Everything was created by God except God: correct, an uncreated being cannot be created.
We have free will but God knows everything that we think and do now and in the future: how does Gods knowledge infringe on your free will?
Only Christianity is true, but Hinduism and Islam are also true: false all religions can be wrong, but they can’t all be right. Who is making that claim here?

algebe's picture
@AJ777: Jesus died, and was

@AJ777: Jesus died, and was resurrected: not a violation of the law of non contradiction.

If he could be resurrected, then he was not dead, unless you are arbitrarily redefining "dead".
You are also redefining "everything", since that also encompasses god.
If god knows everything I'm going to do, I can't change that. Hence I have no free will.
Religions can all be true if they assert, as does Christianity, that there can be truth without evidence. They simply rewrite the rules of logic.

AJ777's picture
In order for a person to be

In order for a person to be resurrected they must die. Central to the definition of resurrection. Your atheism pre-supposes this cannot happen, so you are not open to the evidence.
If you watch a recorded sports game on TV that occurred in the past does this change the outcome of the game or the ability of the players to make free choices? Of course a claim can be true without evidence. However, Christianity does not ask for blind faith. There is ample evidence to support the claims. Atheism, has been redefined to attempt to shift the burden of proof to theists.

algebe's picture
@AJ777: so you are not open

@AJ777: so you are not open to the evidence.

What evidence?

The images of players in a recorded sports game do not have free will. They are images, patterns of bits expressed as electrons or color changes in liquid crystal. So no, watching a recorded game doesn't change the outcome of the game.

The burden of proof has always been on theists. They are the ones making claims about invisible entities that have no detectable effect on the real world. I am not convinced by those claims.

Please tell me if you spent a few minutes thinking about that question you can answer why it would infringe on your (anyones!) free will.

If you cant, please tell me you are trolling.

If no on both, who have I been arguing with? The writing/spelling/grammar speaks towards someone of at least average intelligence, but then, why do I suddenly feel both guilty and annoyed at myself that I responded to you at all?
