Monk in Thailand Expelled for Living With a Woman

Thailand Monk

A 32-year-old monk in the Nonthaburi Province of Thailand was recently expelled after he was found living with a woman in a single’s apartment. Senior abbot Phra Samut Pairot Sangwaro led a troop of soldiers to raid the monk’s room on the fourth floor of an apartment building late at night on November 25, following complaints from neighbours.

According to local media reports, at the time of the raid, the monk Phra Suirya Yasuko had just emerged from the bathroom and he was found in the room with a 43-year-old woman, who was clad in a phatung with a towel on her head.

Yasuko used to serve as a monk at a temple in Suphan Buri, said the senior abbot who led the troop of soldiers to Yasuko’s residence. According to Sangwaro, Yasuko had travelled to Nonthaburi, saying he had to raise donations for his temple. At the time of his arrest, Yasuko claimed to be living on the fifth floor of the same building and said he had run out of water, which is why he sought permission from the woman on the fourth floor to use her bathroom. However, when the soldiers took Yasuko to the room he claimed to have been staying in, it was found to be empty and dirty.

Sangwaro said Yasuko would have to be expelled for breaking his vow of celibacy.
