Nonbelievers Revel at the First Meeting of Sunday’s Finest

Sunday's Finest

For those who like the idea of going to church for the community feel and music it has to offer but are not essentially interested in organized religion, Sunday’s Finest, a church-like service for nonbelievers, may just be the latest option for a fun-filled weekend. Having conducted its first get together in San Francisco on August 2, Sunday’s Finest witnessed an astounding turnover.

Mustafa Khan, founder of Sunday’s Finest, said that he hopes his initiative would bring in a fresh whiff of air to the otherwise religious American society with what he defined as a variety show within the structure of a church service.

Speaking to the media about his latest project, Khan said to those who wish to attend Sunday’s Finest, there is no need to wear an Easter bonnet, a tie or one of those giant hats that the pope wears.

“Attending church can be a powerful thing, especially the sense of community it creates. But if you don’t subscribe to any particular religion, Sunday’s Finest is a nice middle ground,” he explained.

As heaven and hell continue to be two extreme ends of the religious spectrum, the middle ground being introduced to Americans by Sunday’s Finest seems to be a rather sweet spot for atheists and agnostics alike. With a non-religious communion, acrobatic performers, gospel choir singing pop songs and brunch, Sundays may never be the same again.

As the first of its gatherings was organized at The Chapel in the Mission, some perceived Sunday’s Finest to be the latest hipster-like fad with a Valencia Street venue and low-end beer but others felt that the event managed to encapsulate the root essence of what churches have to offer to believers – specifically, getting to interact with like-minded people from different walks of life and celebrating everything good and happy that life has to offer every day.
