On June 28, Sergei Lavrov — the Foreign Minister of Russia — claimed that the western educational system teaches children that Jesus is bisexual and non-binary. In his essay published on The Ministry of Foreign Affairs website, Lavrov claimed that students are being taught that Jesus was bisexual.
Lavrov mentioned “a number of Western countries,” not providing any specific country. Adding that, the “enlightened Europe” is leading the charge, promoting “aggressive LGBT propaganda. And that “the genetic code of the planet’s key civilizations” is being assaulted.
“Boundlessly Permissive” - Lavrov also cried out against Western countries and how they are constantly “encroaching on international laws,” including the very nature of humanity. He goes as far as baselessly claiming that world religions are under attack, with the United States leading the charge. With this statement, the tone of Lavrov’s essay has changed dramatically back to its political theme.
Local Russian news outlets speculate that Lavrov is merely rousing up his overwhelmingly socially conservative political base in Russia. Lavrov’s baseless but controversial claim against Western countries and the increasing support for the LGBTQ+ community comes in the looming parliamentary elections this coming September 19, 2021.
Lavrov, who has maintained a high approval rating, was chosen by President Vladimir Putin to head the United Russian party. He has also served as Foreign Minister for 16 years.
Multiple sources have been cited as the root for Lavrov’s unfounded claim. A TikTok video of an Australian mother listening to her children discussing the things they learned in school. The children can be heard in the video concluding that Jesus is bisexual because he loves everyone. And that he is non-binary because he is a man that wears a dress.
On June 29, 2021, The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation spokeswoman, Maria Zakharova, denied that the TikTok video is the source. Instead, she referred to “The Gospel According to Jesus, Queen of Heaven,” a play by Jo Clifford, a British playwright. Her play depicts Jesus as a transwoman and alluding to the Last Supper as a “revolutionary queer ritual.”
