Turkey: Facebook Deletes Pages Carrying Content Offending Muslims

Facebook - Turkey

Facebook has succumbed to Turkey’s authoritarian threats yet again, by deleting over a thousand pages that carried content deemed offensive to Muslims. With fears of being banned completely and suffering a significant loss in its operating funds after Turkey temporarily blocked Youtube and Twitter in 2014, Facebook recently decided to give in to the Islamic regime’s demands.

The decision came after a court in Ankara ordered for all pages insulting Prophet Mohammad to be blocked. The court also warned that the social networking site would be banned completely if it did not comply with its orders. This court’s decision comes only days after another court in Turkey banned access to a number of websites featuring controversial content related to the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo.

At that time, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg had said that his business would not censor content related to Charlie Hebdo, because the website did not believe in being dictated by a group of radical individuals.

According to Facebook’s records, as many as 1,893 pages have been completely deleted at the request of Turkey’s administration. While the social networking site clarified it did not agree with Turkey’s stance, it also explained that there was no other option but to cooperate with its government’s demands.
