I'm constantly reminded, reproachfully, that I was born Muslim and that it's my duty to remain faithful to Allah. Islam functions very much like a clan. It's a closely intertwined tribe whose rules you must obligatorily and blindly obey.

Many tend to attribute humanity's glory and evil to God's will, while omitting human effort and capability. Does believing in a deity necessarily mean degrading human beings? Is humanism compatible with religion?

Religious conservatism dictates social standards in Egypt. Sexual harassment continues to be a legitimate problem and is fueled, in part, by beliefs about women that are taught by religious institutions.

Even though atheism is a personal choice, religious institutions seem to find its presence threatening – as in Egypt where it is condemned by Islam.
