In May next year, Japan will enthrone a new emperor after the current imperial dodderer takes early retirement. The Japanese government will spend billions on several major Shinto religious rituals during the following months. Buddhist and Christian groups plan to challenge the planned expenditure in court as unconstitutional. Japan's constitution stipulates the separation of religion and state, but the rule is observed about as well as it is in the US (though there's no Shinto message on the money).
Christians and Buddhists would never dream of trying to establish state religions, would they? It'll be interesting to see whether Muslims in Japan join in the lawsuit to complete the triangle of hypocrisy.
