"Yea, but every good Christian knows the forgeries were put there to confuse the non-believers"

Just so.

Just as a born againie acquaintance 'splained me; god also created all those fossils to confuse non believers. Straight face too, I swear . Him not me. He went all chicken lipped when I laughed at him ***.Muttered something about respecting the beliefs of others, which only made me laugh harder.

I 'splained him that I respected him as a person, but not his beliefs. That because his beliefs are demonstrably absurd and invite ridicule. At that point his bottom lip disappeared entirely and he slunk off to have a cry*.

Not my fault if he chooses to belong to an organisation which is anti intellectual, anti science and anti reason.

(((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((9)))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))

***BUT, but but, chickens don't have lips. Exactly. .

* I respect anyone's right to their personal superstitions. Until they begin proselytising me. Then they receive the withering contempt they reserve for atheists and abortionists . Unless of course it's really obvious they are as mentally impaired as their beliefs imply. Then they get a NABISCO cookie and are invited to have a scoot on my trike. BUT, under no circumstances are they invited into my fort.

Cognostic "blessed 3 oz jar

Cognostic "blessed 3 oz jar of Holy water straight from Vatican City. This little jar is guaranteed to cure cancer, grow legs on amputees, cure the blind, and grant three wishes."

....and give you Covid 19, which you can of course cure through prayer, so it's all good..and if you should die it's your own fault for not praying hard or sincerely enough.

@Sheldon: Theists place so

@Sheldon: Theists place so much value on the idea of the DSS as evidence for their beliefs

At the same time, they are no doubt terrified that the scrolls will undermine their cherished beliefs, shatter their illusions, and expose the fabrications of the last 2,000 years.

I suspect they fear this will happen to others, less blinkered and intransigent than they are, judging by the closed minded attitude we see on here from most theists. Fearing they're proved wrong seems not to register...maybe at a subconscious level?

The (real) Dead Sea Scrolls are evidence of something. Right?

My point is that forgeries of the DSS are also evidence of something - evidence that the REAL Dead Sea Scrolls are tremendously valuable.

Do not disagree with you there Lion IRC, it is very valuable to certain people. They are near worthless in value of actual testable evidence for any particular god idea, but very valuable to the people that want to use it to advance their god idea.

On the same note, going by measure of valuable, I can name you some sunglasses (Oakley brand first comes to mind), shoes ,(Nike air jordan, or even more expensive women fashion shoes/heels.) That are imitated all the time for many millions of dollars a year, year after year.

Any rare document about

Any rare document about important periods in history will be extremely valuable, but that's actually a reason for skepticism, because the monetary value of such documents is a strong incentive for forgery. The prime example is the diaries of Adolf Hitler.

Catholics, not so much.

A lot of the Dead Sea Scrolls actually confirm scripture, and so are accepted. When such things do not support scripture they are simply declared apocryphal . QED. The logic is that if they WERE revealed script, they would agree with the canon ,if they don't they ain't. Bullet proof.

A great example of business as usual is the Shroud of Turin of Turin. Although proved to be a medieval forgery, the faithful simply ignore the evidence. They continue believing the shroud is 2000 years old and bears the imprint of Jesus from his tomb.

Being so much younger, I suspect many of the protestant sects are far less self confident than the Catholics..

IMO the historical existence of the Jesus of the New Testament is irrelevant. The myths are everything . Because religious faith is formed without reference to reason or proof, neither reason nor lack of proof will [usually] destroy it .
