The world really went to hell

The world really went to hell when it became possible for morons to use keyboards.

Please say hello to Ken Ham for me at your next visit to the Ark Encounter.

... oh, and by the way, I think your "!" key might be sticking.

So, essentially you do not

So, essentially you do not understand evolution, natural selection or have any basic grasp of science.

You also offer a god of the gaps fallacy without offering any demonstrable evidence to support the notion that there is a god.

So basically, you're a fucking idiot.

Well done, go bounce your ball.

The father of speciation is Ernst Mayr. He authored several books. When I was in graduate school his book was used as the text. I assume some schools still use his text for 600 level Speciation. There is no way to properly treat this subject within in a narrow discussion. I would just refer you to his book "Animal Species and Evolution". He was one of the great minds in the biological sciences. I will only add that your analogy of the dog and cat has to be viewed in the context of phylogenetic history. Species do not evolve in a straight line. It is more like a multi-pronged pitch fork. They diverge and each isolated gene pool flows into different species.

How many other scientific

How many other scientific facts do you deny, that in no way contradict any part of your superstitious religious beliefs?

I think by now we all know the answer to this, just as we all know you will never give a candid answer.

Species evolution through natural selection is a scientific fact, explained and evidenced by the scientific theory of evolution beyond any reasonable or rational doubt. Denying the mass of evidence produced by over 160+ years of global scientific scrutiny is no different than denying gravity, or the rotundity of the earth. Among the many astonishing facts about evolution is that Darwin got so many things absolutely right at such an early stage, and without the massive amount of evidence collected since. I think such asinine denials are best answered by a born again christian.

Francis Collins

"evolution has been very much on the scene for 150 years, and the science that supports Darwin’s theory has gotten stronger and stronger over those decades. That evidence is particularly strong today given the ability to study DNA and to see the way in which it undergirds Darwin’s theory in a marvellously digital fashion. "

"I think there are at least three problems that have led to the pickle we’re in. One is that, by its very nature, evolution is counterintuitive. The idea that a process over hundreds of millions of years could give rise to something as complicated as the vertebrate eye, for example, is not something that seems natural, normal or believable to one who has not worked through the details. That is because our minds are very poor at contemplating something that happened so slowly over such a long period of time. And so, the alternative arguments for supernatural design appeal to a lot of people...it has to do with the nature of evolution as having occurred in a timeframe that is just not familiar to the human mind and therefore is difficult to accept. "

"we have made, I’m afraid, fairly lousy efforts over the last 150 years in our educational system to convey these concepts in school settings effectively to a large number of people in this country. And so, many people have never really seen the evidence to support evolution. So when you put that together with the natural incredulity one has upon hearing this kind of explanation of the diversity of living things, it’s no wonder that those folks don’t immediately rush to embrace Darwin."

Please tell me this is some

Please tell me this is some sort of troll attempt, and not some theist coming to an atheist debate forum arguing about something that has nothing to do with atheist. (With zero evidence to back their claim that evolution is wrong and their particular god idea did it.)

As someone that went to school and read the text books, evolution theory is about as well accepted and evidenced by the people that actually study the material, as the "theory" that the earth is a globe and not flat.

On a contemporary basis there are not going to be dog-cat species, although there are some examples that approach that. The reason: when the line of evolution diverges and each gene pool flows in two directions one going up left to the cat and one going up right to the dog. It would not normally fit that a species that would fit the dog-cat characteristics would be extant. Again, you would do much better if you studied Ernst Mayr's work.

Note: Extant is the opposite of Extinct.

And there your bias becomes

And there your bias becomes unmasked, you dislike evolution because it doesn't conform to the myths of your imaginary friend.

Time to grow up.

Stated: "Some examples that approach that, right?"

"Evolution is a lie!

It's a fabricated system of elaborate lies invented by wicked, Christ-rejecting, unbelieving, liberals. The purpose of Evolution is to intentionally provide an atheist substitute in young people's curriculum instead of faith in God their Creator."

RESPONSE

There are examples in the animal kingdom where an organism shares traits of two other species. You mentioned the hypotheical "dog-cat" animal. When I said there are examples that approach that, I was thinking of the cheetah. It differs from other cats in not having retractable claws. A cheetah's foot looks like a dog's foot. There are other examples of what are called transitional ancestral species in the fossil record that have traits of two different species that they share at the branch on the phylogenetic tree.

As I said previously, I might as well be barking at the moon if you don't have the prerequisite knowledge to process this information. I say that because you cannot impart to someone a body of knowledge that takes years to accumulate. If you wish to form your own explanation, that is your province to do so.

Creationism is a demonstrable lie, species evolution through natural selection is a scientific fact, supported by a weight of objective evidence that is beyond any sane rational or objective denial.

Remember: Evolution is

Remember: Evolution is categorized by science as theory because it does not lend itself easily to being repeated in a laboratory situation because of the limitations of time. However, the amount of data and evidence accumulated through biological and paleontological study would fill a library. If you indicted evolution and litigated whether it did or did not commit the crime of creating the species extinct and extant. It would more than meet the threshold of guilty beyond a shadow of doubt.

I hate to nitpick, but a scientific theory is defined as a well-substantiated explanation of some aspect of the natural world, based on a body of facts that have been repeatedly confirmed through observation and experiment. Such fact-supported theories are not "guesses" but reliable accounts of the real world.

And while I agree with the thrust of your post,, it is also worth noting that speciation, that is species evolution,, has been observed in real time in scientific research in laboratories. Using fruit flies which have an accelerated reproduction rate, so much so that scientists were able to breed an entirely new species of fruit fly.

Kudos on reaching that milestone, I am a pup just half way through my 55th year. I have been to the pub, so my apologies if I force a point more than I need to. It's raining here as if god is properly pissed.

I jest of course, it's the boat every single time....:-)

This has been a very wet winter. It rains 4 days, then we have a cloudy day and it starts raining again. We are suppose to get 4 inches of rain Monday-Tuesday-Wednesday. I miss those clear blue skies of the Rocky Mountains.

One has to wonder, once human

One has to wonder, once human race has the ability to play with evolution/genetics at will, --for better or worse-- Something that at current rates of medical/science advancement could actually happen within the next 50 years, it is already well underway now.

Real curious what the: "evolution is a myth" folks will be saying at that point.

ronald bertram's picture
There will be some

There will be some insurmountable issues with playing with evolution. The environment is the harth where evolution is foraged. The scope of scale and time are difficult to imitate.

However, genetics are something else. Once genomes are fully mapped ( has been done for man and cow) and the impact of every marker is catalogued, watch out!

Edited to add. Cows rank pretty high. The USDA funded the mapping of their genome. An excerpt:

The size of the bovine genome is 3 Gb (3 billion base pairs). It contains approximately 22,000 genes of which 14,000 are common to all mammalian species. Bovines share 80 percent of their genes with humans; cows are less similar to humans than rodents (humans and rodents belong to the clade of Supraprimates).

@Bright Raven

Oh I agree, it will create all sorts of major issues. Just like the exploration of self learning AI, the ability to mess with this stuff creates a powerful tool, and quite possibly too powerful a tool for us emotional based species to properly handle. It would almost assuredly be weaponized, just like nuclear fission (and later fusion.) It has powerful positive benefits, but also some negatives that are almost too terrible to even contemplate.

@Bright Raven: There will be

@Bright Raven: There will be some insurmountable issues with playing with evolution.

We've been doing that for a long time. Cattle, sheep, pigs, horses, and dogs have all been transformed beyond recognition from their ancestors. Ditto for corn, wheat, rice, and of course bananas (the perfect fruit crafted by god to fit the human hand).

The big differences today are first that we can by-pass centuries of selective breeding by going straight to the DNA, and second that we can tinker with our own genetic destiny.

@NewSkeptic Re: "Is the table okay?"

Sadly (and amazingly), no. Badly dented. Nothing remarkable, of course, if it was a regular table. However, with the recent onslaught of brainless trolls the last few days, my head was hitting my tabletop so much that I finally had to install a titanium plate over the stainless steel top. There were so many dents in the steel top that I could not even keep a cup standing upright on it. And NOW there is a dent in the TITANIUM.... Shit!... *throwing hands up in exasperation*...
