So atheists friends, how did you spend the holiday season? Did you enjoyed as much as Christians did? Christmas season is really enjoyable for everyone because of colorful decorations, gifts and parties. Did you attend parties too?

For the holidays I: became an appliance repairman, realized that most of my wife's family are severely mentally retarded, found out that two of my wife's friends are ho ho hoes, broke a tooth and was able to network my way onto several new projects for my restoration shop. Not a bad run at all this year! :)

For me the holidays meant getting to eat great food and also getting present and spending money in presents. I take part in the celebration because I get gifts from others and it would be rude not to give them any.
I think I did, I got very drunk ate ham and played video games.
Nice to read some atheist friends here also enjoyed the holidays. Yes right that accepting gifts and giving gifts is a nice thing to do on holidays especially giving gifts to kids and seeing them happy and feeling the love.
Now that the holiday is over, I hope giving will still be a part of Catholic members.
I celebrate Christmas, because I like presents. And I deserve presents for tolerating my nut job family's presence.
I had a wonderful holiday, the best in a while!
My brother has just moved back from overseas, and brought a small child with him. We did the whole thing and got a tree and baked some pig meat and wrapped presents... which was particularly entertaining because none of us are believers and frankly, we don't know how to do *any* of that crap.
The kid, being only 3 and not having had a christmas prior, kept trying to get the dogs to unwrap presents for him. The dogs only like the edible presents, so the christmas morning thing dragged on into the afternoon... which was fine because my new sister in law was awesome enough to give me beer for christmas.
It was nice to have a special day, and we don't need an excuse for it.
Now, this is a personal belief, but I don't believe atheists should celebrate Christmas. Yes, they have a choice to, but they should choose not to. The atheist will celebrate Christmas (notice the root word "Christ") but not Hannukah, or Kwanza, or Ramadan, or Eid, or any other religious holiday, just Christmas. Well, I believe that if you don't believe in Jesus Christ you shouldn't celebrate a holiday dedicated to him so you can receive gifts.
You do recognize that Christmas is a derivative of a much older holiday from Pagan Europe, correct? Their god died and was reborn once a year, with the cycle of the grain.
Some christian sects don't even believe that *they* should be celebrating christmas, for that very reason.
Basically, winter here is way too long to go without a party. New Year's is awesome and all, but I prefer to have separate holidays for family vs friends :)
In short, there's nothing wrong with an atheist celebrating Christmas, because it's not really even about Jesus anymore. But, my question is, why would an atheist *want* to celebrate the birthday of somebody he doesn't believe in?
Secondly, Jesus was not born o December 25th, most intelligent theists realize this fact. I understand this fact, and I think they could have chosen a better date for the celebration of this event. The reason that Christians established the date of Christmas as December 25th was because many people gathered on this date (due to Pagan reasons) and believed that it would be a good thing to establish the holiday's date close to when people are already gathered together, thus, Christmas was given the date of December 25th.
Personally, I believe Christmas should be celebrated, but on what Jesus' birthday actually is, or the closest we can get to finding it.
I suspect most atheists don't actually want to celebrate a birthday of a fictional character, but if everyone else is having a party, why not join in? The celebration is what's important. What inspires it is no more than an excuse.

To be more precise, I meant a character from fictional stories. I have no issue believing a teacher existed, around whom all sorts of mythology was built. What is celebrated is the supposed virgin birth of a deity, so a fictional character in that sense.
Case in point - Abraham Lincoln Vampire Slayer is a fictional story.
But, strangely enough, Abraham Lincoln seems to actually have existed.

Hey Talk of God, Originally Christmas was as Sammy said a pagan holiday and not a christian holiday it more about Jesus than today than it was before Chistians came along renamed it and adopted Santa Claus. In reality how would you feel if we told you Christians should not be celebrating Christamas? You will find most here are for freedom of choice do what you want as long as you don't hurt others. Most not all, some folks on here like you and Peck think that your beliefs should be enforced on others.

The fact of the matter is, it doesn't really matter how it started. I expressed that I knew the origins of Christmas. But today, it is a holiday that addresses and celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ. If you don't believe that Jesus Christ is the son of God, why would you celebrate his birthday? You don't see me celebrating Muslim, Jewish, or Hindu holidays...
Wok of God, could you list the holidays you do celebrate? If your like most Christians you do in fact celebrate some Jewish and Muslim holidays as well a Pagan ones. but to answer you question I celebrate from the Solstice to the New Year and Christmas happens to be during that time, Also because I am not about to ruin the celebrations of others I see no reason to interrupt their celebrations with my beliefs. They are celebrating and I am celebrating we might as well celebrate together and why not, while everyone is looking for things to celebrate sure I'll celebrate Jesus's birthday even though it's not Jesus's birthday and Hanuka as well as the Jamaican one. It a great time to celebrate everyone is in the mood and that make celebrating better.
