My teacher got me started on this today. turns out I'm pretty boneheaded and hard to teach (it took him over an hour to explain a simple idea that I still don't get)
So, philosophically, what is a concept?

It is an abstracted object used to categorize less abstracted objects.
what is an abstact object?
It is a general object that represents a collection of less general objects, by removing properties they don't have in common, but maintaining some properties they do have in common.
"BEASTS ABSTRACT NOT" - John Locke
that makes more sense than before but I am still confused
Thanks for the insights though. I do greatly appreciate it
A thought construct. The best way to explain it is to think of the number one. One is a concept, a thought construct we use to quantify either objects or other concepts like measurement, it does not exist independent of a mind that comprehends it. You cannot turn over a rock on mars and find the number one, it isn't an object.
