Sadly many voters share these same qualities. A good way to get elected is to find an angry mob and shout with them.
Why elect the corrupt, egotistical or narcissistic?
Because that's who is running for office.
Only the corrupt qualify. An honest person would be assassinated. Trump is in office for no other reason than he does not have the mental ability to understand global issues and simply does what he is told. The position of president has been a patsy since the 60's. There is no real choice in American Democracy.
Douglas Adams explained it best:
"On its world, the people are people. The leaders are lizards. The people hate the lizards and the lizards rule the people."
"Odd," said Arthur, "I thought you said it was a democracy."
"I did," said Ford. "It is."
"So," said Arthur, hoping he wasn't sounding ridiculously obtuse, "why don't people get rid of the lizards?"
"It honestly doesn't occur to them," said Ford. "They've all got the vote, so they all pretty much assume that the government they've voted in more or less approximates to the government they want."
"You mean they actually vote for the lizards?"
"Oh yes," said Ford with a shrug, "of course."
"But," said Arthur, going for the big one again, "why?"
"Because if they didn't vote for a lizard," said Ford, "the wrong lizard might get in. Got any gin?"

Honest responses but there seems other considerations too. Cronus: "Because that's who is running for office."
Hilary Clinton isn't dishonest. There are dishonest, egotistical and narcissistic politicians though.
"All politicians are liars" (or lizards) doesn't mean that they all tell lies where you and I would not. Democracy calls for compromise and sometimes collective responsibility. The latter involves supporting policies one opposes to get others loyal to the party's important aims to achieve the most important policies.
All democracies are imperfect and if that results in only the dishonest being elected, why support democracy over some form of authoritarianism?

Perhaps too many folks are unable to recognize those things in other people..particularly people who are promising to improve their lives.
Most national politician's images are handled by professional teams. You only get to see what they present. Trump handled his image in spite of his pros , so we got to see the bare truth. W had Carl Rove, Obama kept a tight grip on his image during his entire tenure as president. It would be difficult to see the dysfunction through this media wall.
