Since one of the rules of the forum is no homophobic or sexist behavior, I guess that transphobic behavior shouldn't be allowed either.

I understand "discrimination" to refer to acts of prejudice.
While it may be true that rules are commonly flouted everywhere, I don't think that means we should not have principles to try to live by.

Hell. I ain't got no problem with transgenders. I even dated one once. She used to be a he. And she was delightful person to be around.
However, I do not think the rule should be changed to a blanket "no discrimination" rule. I discriminate against ALL absolutists after what they have done to me. To just say "no discrimination" means I'd have to leave. Besides, does not the "sexist comments" part cover that?

I have been discriminated AND persecuted against my whole life due to my "lack of any belief in any sky-faerie." I am now turning the tables. I have been discussing beliefs or lack thereof for only about the last 15 years. The prior 40+ years, I have been discriminated AND persecuted against by Absolutists. Remember MY definition for Absolutist?

I don't think it is the opinion that is the problem. Opinions are just ideas. It is only a problem when its directed at a member or when the opinion is not challenged and becomes something used commonly to keep certain people from enjoying the forums. My way of thinking is that prejudice is only prejudice when it is intended to be prejudicial. This PC crap annoys the shit out of me. I love a good polish joke and I have never associated the jokes with anyone who is polish. One of my black friends, whom I play poker with, is extremely funny and cracks black jokes all the time, along with honky jokes or cracker jokes and we just have a good time. Nothing offensive in any of it. What's offensive is people with offensive minds.
The other day I was in a training at the university. A German man was presenting on techniques for doing research. He pulled up a slide with a pretty girl sitting at a table, books open, in a library. Obviously too sexy to be studying such a book in a library. So this woman's libber snowflake pipes up and calls the picture sexist. She basically goes on a rant. Someone in the back pipes in; "The picture just wants to make be go to the library." The woman continues her rant. I happened to be sitting near and nearly blurted out; as is my custom, "Are you trying to say pretty women are too stupid to go to the library?" For the same of PC and acting like a professional, I just put my head down on the table and laughed to myself. Later, I told a few friends. The German guy apologized (I really hate that) and said he did not mean to offend and the lecture went on. THIS IS THE CRAP WE DEAL WITH IN THE WORLD TODAY. A bunch of entitled do-good, nosy, busy body assholes who want everyone to be the same. Sorry! People have opinions and points of view. Debate is good for the soul. And when someone puts a stupid idea out there or makes a stupid comment, like those idiot bloggers that think they can talk about the Atheist World View, they need to be called on their ignorance. Just my opinion. The best thing these people can do is post and get an honest reaction from others. They probably will not listen to it but hay, they don't have to be friends or acquaintances either.

It's a "Slippery Slope" argument. You let one in and you let them all in. I think you will have to use your best judgment and just call them as you see them. Someone around here gets to interpret the rules. That's just the way things work. It is easier to say "No" and then back-step than it is to say "Yes" and try to back-step. No one can fault for doing what you think is best.

Well, for what it's worth, here's my two cents worth about our darling little Term-dog. (He's so adorable sometimes.)
So, yeah, I agree the little poochie has made a few remarks that are maybe a little less than pleasant. And, personally, I am still trying to decide if he is legitimate, or if he is just saying a bunch of crap to be annoying. Either way, however, what I happen to like about all the threads in which he is involved is the fact there are so many outstanding counters to his garbage. Now, does that mean he will eventually change his mind about anything? I don't know. That remains to be seen. (I doubt it, though.) However, there are many other people who read these discussions but never participate. And, perhaps, maybe there could be one or more of those who are "sitting on the fence" who read some of his nonsense and think, "Hmmm... Geeeee... That really isn't something with which I want to be associated." More importantly, though, is that same somebody might read one of the excellent replies/counters to that nonsense and think, "Holy cow! That actually makes sense," thereby changing their mindset and helping them let go of some of the detrimental beliefs to which they have been clinging.
Basically, the adorable Term-dog has no doubt shown himself to be something of a chauvinistic transphopia type of guy, but (personal opinion) I don't really think he has crossed any lines yet that would justify banning. He has opinions. Whether we like them or not is really irrelevant, to be honest. And as long as he does not cross that line of being downright menacing and blatantly confrontational, then let him spout his dribble while we continue to counter with sound and rational replies. (And the occasional jab here and there. *snicker*) Anyway, that's my take on the whole thing.
Oh, by the way, am I the only one who thinks it is totally hilarious to be talking about somebody as if they are not there, when that same somebody could actually be standing in the same room right next to you hearing everything you say? LMAO
Edit to add: One more thing to consider.... If we start banning or censoring all the remarks that are "offensive" or controversial, or "discriminating", then this place will get emptied rather quickly. I would likely be one of the first ones tossed out on my head, for that matter. I mean, c'mon! Let's face it, folks, we can all be pretty damn insulting and offensive sometimes. Although sometimes I think we have to react to blatant aggression and ad hominem arguments, especially against those with demonstrated and habitual repugnance for verbal violence, with monumental slap downs. This, if you like is the drama of the place. Where the slick stiletto work and logical armour of the residents can give way to berserker rage( The 10th Cavalry coming over the hill with a few Vikings and Mongols added on) and entertain the bleachers in that way as well as giving ourselves that "mind clearing bliss of a take down well done" After all a bit of occasional deserved, metaphorical or even allegorical blood and tissue strewn around the forums makes it more interesting for the reader. As well as showing the fence sitters that we are real people, not logic machines or as TD would have it "leftist wet puppy feeders"
EDIT: to add I am a leftist, I like puppies, and I feed them as well as our local Ravens, Butcher birds and Peewits. The cat gets his raw meat, and yes, rightists, I am a pussy lover too, and I LOATHE latte and soy milk...so fuck you and your stupid labels.
