Matt Shea will need to wait

Matt Shea will need to wait in line AND be happy with being the 52nd state.

Me and my "lefty" mates have long understood that Australia, since WW2, under our invariably sycophantic governments, has always been the 51st State of the US. And with a Pentecostal prime minister and Catholic heavy Cabinet who spends more on submarines and jet fighters than firefighting equipment we are equivalent to a militaristic Christian state, and even better than that, we are a whole nation, divided as we are.
In my ignorance I would not recommend Shea's idea. Seems the US already has several militaristic Christian states already.

Just ranting, and really having a wonderful New Years Day.

Good luck for the coming year to all!

Fear not. Australia will soon be freed from the baleful influence of the U.S. and its home-grown bible-addled politicians when it's absorbed as the West Island of New Zealand.

Yep, I will vote for that as long as we get Jacinta and you put Scomo and his crew on an island somewhere off the South....

Well I am all for getting

Well I am all for getting what we see as a responsible government. It would make a nice change to the selfish leaderless back-stabbing bloody circus of power mad aspiring dictators claiming god given authority, that we have now.

I have always maintained a healthy respect for NZ for removing themselves from the antiquated ANZUS pact.

But after our catastrophic bushfires, I do hope New Zealand likes its new continent well done, and with just a touch of carbonisation. No doubt they have already caught a whiff of barbecued eucalyptus that has wafted across the Tasman.

And the island Old Man mentioned for Scomo...make it way, way south...nowhere near Hawaii.

I like to sea Scomo and his gang shuffling around with penguins in the Auckland Islands, and maybe frolicking with the Orcas and seals.

To paraphrase NZ Prime Minister "Piggy" Muldoon who was commenting on the great numbers of kiwis moving to Oz:

"It will improve the total IQ of both countries."

Its possible a similar outcome might happen if the two nations amalgamate. Everybody wins. We can give up trying to beat them at Union.

I like this "piggy" guy. To bad he's dead.

@Grinseed: to paraphrase NZ Prime Minister "Piggy" Muldoon

Piggy was quite a character. He used to threaten journalists who asked awkward questions with the sack at a time when most media was government owned.
One night he got blind drunk and called a general election, which he then lost.
His staff used to let the air out of his tires to stop him driving drunk.
After leaving politics, he did a season as the narrator in a stage version of Rocky Horror Picture Show.
He was a leading expert on dahlias.

Pickle me grand mother!

Pickle me grand mother!

Shades of ' The Handmaids Tale ' and Plymouth Rock, 1620.

As the old saw goes "Those who do not learn from history are condemned to repeat it" (perhaps George Santayana)

Perhaps THAT's the point . I'm sure there are more than a few believers who think of 1600's as America's golden age of"religious freedom" (translation; the freedom to make everyone believe as you do and to kill anyone who disagrees)

I guess that would be fine if they founded their own little kingdom in say Utah, with the Mormons, and had a 30 foot 15 foot thick wall surrounding them, with no gates. Perhaps they could make Donald the founding president-for-life .

The older I get, the less likely I am to be surprised at anything done by human beings , most especially in the name of religion.

Jeez.

Jeez.

First, the only possibility for a legitimate 51st state right now would be Puerto Rico.

Second, He's not looking for a 51st state, he's looking to take a chunk off of Oregon and then secede from the US. His entire premise and basis for this "51st state" is completely unconstitutional.

@ListLocke Re: "His entire premise and basis for this "51st state" is completely unconstitutional."

...*waving hand in dismissal*... Aw, constitution monstitution! They are doing the work of The Lord! Hallelujah! Ain't no insignificant little scribbling of words like the U.S. Constitution gonna stand in the way of The Word of God! Praise Jesus! And as for their stealing a large chunk of land from an long-established state?.... Pfffft! Child's play. A trivial inconvenience. If GOD wants that land for His Chosen People, then He will deliver it unto them! (Even if it means killing every living creature within it.) Constitution be damned! Can I get an "Amen!", brothers and sisters?

"First, the only possibility for a legitimate 51st state right now would be Puerto Rico."

Good. The three kinds of US citizenship has always confused me.

IE:

(1) . Full citizenship to those born the US (not a right which exists absolutely in Australia)

(2) Naturalised citizens cannot be president. A pity, I would have be interested in seeing the Prezinator. Here any citizen can be Prime Minister. Last one was Juila Gillard, (2010-2013) who was born in Wales, UK .**

(3) Puerto Rican citizens cannot vote in US federal elections, even if living in the US.

Yair, probably time for Puerto Rico to become a US state--if there is plebiscite to make sure this what the majority wants .

Please correct me if I am wrong in fact

@cranky47: Here any citizen

@cranky47: Here any citizen can be Prime Minister.

But Australia's got a constitutional clause banning anyone with dual citizenship from serving in Parliament, which is pretty crazy for an immigrant nation.

I thought it was hilarious when so many elected candidates got excluded after the last election because they didn't even know they had a second citizenship. These morons create incredibly complex and illogical citizenship and visa regulations, but they can't even keep track of their own status. I was especially amused when that two-timing turnip-head Barnaby Joyce got bumped for being a closet Kiwi.

I guess each country has its

I guess each country has its own eccentricities .

I don't think it's too much to ask aspiring politicians know the rules. Certainly a lot more flexible than outright banning of the foreign born CITIZENS from being President.

Sadly, humans, are humans...

Sadly, humans, are humans... everywhere.

But NZ certainly does seem to have less of THOSE humans then most places.
