Um... How can we debunked some "Biblical Prophecies" out there?

What biblical prophecy?

What biblical prophecy?

1. Have the person read the prophecy. Since the origins of Christianity every single prophecy has been linked to some modern event. None have come to pass. Prophecies are so vague that they can fit any situation. Many Christian sects interpret prophecies differently. Jews do not recognize Christian Prophecies.

Matt Dillahaunty deals with a prophecy caller.

It would help if you post the prophecy.... (It's all a bunch of garbage.)

Predictions should be clear

Predictions should be clear and precise and time-limited (i.e. specific).

Why would you need to? So

Why would you need to? So called prophesies are usually extremely tenuous, and when they are examined objectively amount to nothing more than anecdotal claims that someone once claimed something and that it happened as described. Even if this were true, and we had no explanation as to how the person did it, all it amounts to is an argument from ignorance fallacy.

Nothing can be rationally asserted as true because of the lack of a contrary explanation. People get the lottery numbers correct every day of the week, against massive odds, it doesn't mean they have the gift of prophesy.

The really funny thing is such claims are falsifiable anyway and could easily be tested by asking people who claimed they had such a power to consistently demonstrate it under strictly monitored double blind clinical trials. No one has ever done so obviously, and for fairly obvious reasons. The Templeton foundation, the RCC, both have massive resources to conduct proper research into such claims. Of course the usual desperate rationalisations ensue when prophesy fails, so if the people who believe it is true are going to ignore every failure, but trumpet every alleged success then why should we care about such claims when they are made using such obvious selection bias?

There's nothing to debunk as far as I am concerned and the burden of proof is entirely with those claiming prophesy exists. If it's a natural phenomenon then it can be tested, and yet has not been, quelle surprise. If it is not a natural phenomenon then it is unfalsifiable and we can learn nothing from it.

If any deity exists and wants me to know it does then the idea it is using pathetic cheap magic tricks likes prophesy is beyond absurd to me. On the other hand this is precisely the kind of vapid flimflam archaic and superstitious humans would have found compelling.

@ Sheldon: "There's nothing

@ Sheldon: "There's nothing to debunk as far as I am concerned and the burden of proof is entirely with those claiming prophesy exists."

This hits the nail on the head and deserves repeating. They have to prove a connection between their prophecy and a natural event. It can not be vague or spurious. Watch Matt rip into prophecy on the vids I posted. (Sheldon is on top of his game.)

I especially like the bible

I especially like the bible prophecy about cursing women by giving them a hard labor. That was funny. My kids slid out, almost across the room. It's a good thing there wasn't an open window.

And there's no End Times. We're still here. Eat all the chocolate you can get your hands on!

And no rapture. That was sure a hoax. Here, I maxed out all my credit cards, thinking I wasn't going to be here to pay them, and here, I still am! What's up with that??

The lion never lay with the lamb. That was sure icky, whoever thought that one up.

2 Timothy was a lie, too. When do we get the perilous times that are supposed to be unleashed on us? Which one? Pick a war, any war. There's tons to choose from. Which is the one that Timothy thought up?

I like the prophecy about how

I like the prophecy about how Nebuchadnezzar was going to wipe Tyre clean. Not only did it not happen, but the biblical author admits as much!! God is then going to reward Nebuchadnezzar (who was promised the spoils of Tyre, that island state) by giving him spoils from Egypt. Unfortunately, that didn't happen either!

I also like the biggest prophecy in the Bible, connected to some 90+ verses. Jesus was going to return soon. He was knocking at the door. The present generation of that time was supposed to witness it. "Soon" ran out of gas a long time ago.

I think Talk Origins has a great debunking of the prophecy of Tyre.
