Being a theist is totally better. You are happier being a theist. Because you have eternal life. It feels good knowing the universe only gets better with time and you live forever. Being an atheist, you live in fear because you think you only have one life. I have a soul, so I know that whatever happens to me, will be because my soul craved it.
Being a theist, you see the universe as a much bigger and better place. In a atheists mind, they think the universe is hostile to all life. When in actuality the universe is a loving place. The universe is infinite, atheists are only judging it on a small bit of space.
Overall theists are happier than atheists. Atheists are in a bit of a surprise when they see God after death.
