Bible was written for the past. Can atheists stop applying it to today

the Bible was written for the people who lived at the time it was written and so must be read in the context of that time. What is so hard to understand about that?

The Old Testament is a history of the Jewish people, and quite an accurate one.

The New Testament is a record of the values of Christianity.

It always amazes me the people who know so little about either believe that they are experts in both.

Replace the word "atheists"

Replace the word "atheists" with "religionists". As you say, it is nothing more than the scribblings of ancients for ancients. Get over it.
There are no such things as gods or fairies.

@Jennie Dardis then where

@Jennie Dardis then where does that place the Ten Commandments? By your statement they are invalid and can be ignored because they are nothing but just part of the a history of the Jewish people.

And personally, I found a talking snake a far reach of the imagination, thus we are not born with sin. So what exactly did jesus die for?

Would love to, bible followers should do the same.

the Bible was written for the people who lived at the time it was written and so must be read in the context of that time. What is so hard to understand about that?

Not hard to understand at all, I wish people that read the bible does the same. Ancient bronze age superstitions heavily edited and modified and translated. That it barely represents the original work. A dictionary or encyclopedia written a mere 100 years ago would be near worthless today, except as a study of written history of the people, same should be true for Bibles and other holy books.

The Old Testament is a history of the Jewish people, and quite an accurate one.

Do you need us to quote the old testament parts you skipped over where you better hope it is not an accurate history of jewish people?

The New Testament is a record of the values of Christianity.

Agree, it is very telling to me about the people that strongly believe in the values of the new testament.

It always amazes me the people who know so little about either believe that they are experts in both.

Agree again. Do you consider yourself an expert on atheist? I find most atheist know more about the complete works of various bibles etc then most theist do. Many theist tend to only understand a narrow slice of the single version of the bible their local church favors. Where their religious leader tells them what parts to read.

"The Old Testament is a history of the Jewish people, and quite an accurate one. "

WRONG..... very ,very badly wrong......

Go look up the archaeological evidence for Noah's flood, Joshua's battle at Jericho , the whole Israelite invasion of Canaan , the exodus from Egypt , the empire of David/Solomon , the ambush at Ai. ....there are more ....but I know you are not interested in finding out the truth of these supposed events.

You will find ,I'm afraid , not one shred of evidence for any of it ...... why ?

Because none of it happened.

"The New Testament is a record of the values of Christianity."

Well ,I'm with CyberLN on this.... but I would point out ,just for your edification ,re the veracity of the New Testament.... this.....

You know the ,so called miracle of "the Gaderene swine" ?

Have you ever looked into it...?

No..? (Well colour me soooo surprised ...)

Now while it is true that there are competing theories as to exactly where Gerassa /Gedara was... it is generally considered to occupy a position to the south east of the Sea of Galilee ...... and as the yarn of Jesus' encounter with either the one or two demoniacs says the events took place close to the shore this gives a fairly small area to consider.

You'll remember there were supposed to be a herd of about 2000 pigs grazing on a near-by mountain .
These swine then received the demons (Legion) .... and rushed to their destruction down a "steep place"...

All well and good...... but have you ever looked at a map of the area...? (You don't have to answer ..... I'll just guess that you haven't)

Well if you do..... you will notice that all the land adjacent to ,and south east of the Sea of Galilee is...... how shall I phrase this ?

FLAT AS A WITCHES TIT ..... nothing as big as a mole hill..... (figure of speech...) but you get my drift..... no mountains.... no cliffs...no steep places......in fact the nearest high ground is about 5 km to the south......

So...if there was a miracle..... it was nothing to do with Demon possession ....... but more to do with a herd of long distance running pigs....

If you don't believe me.... check for yourself...use google maps.... and you can pull up photographs of the area.....

,..... and I have to agree with your statement..
."It always amazes me the people who know so little about either believe that they are experts in both."

perhaps you can illuminate us.....

as you yourself seem to know very little about the history of the Jewish people or the "values of Christianity" or indeed the Bible in general.

1. The Bible has nothing to

1. The Bible has nothing to do with history.
2. Christianity was a Jewish sect, What you know as Christianity is the invention of a thousand years of changes.
3. The bible was written and altered millions of times. At least you have that right. It does not apply at all to the modern world. We should not follow the teachings of the bible and hate our non-believing family members, we should not own people or keep slaves, we should be able to eat shrimp or pork, we can work on Sundays / Saturdays without the fear of being killed, we should not kill witches or throw homosexuals off the tops of buildings (like some modern religions), and most certainly we should not abandon out families, think not of tomorrow, and pretend God will take care of everything because we are better than a bunch of flowers. We can certainly agree that the Bible is worthless and means nothing at all in today's world.

HAHAHAHAHA!!!! Laughable! Christian values my ass, as if there is such a thing. Christians don't have values, they have agendas!
Christianity hinges on the myth of jesus crucifixion and resurrection which NEVER FUCKING HAPPENED!
Yeah, the bible is an ancient book written in325 ADE for the people of 325 ADE to consolidate power for Emperor Constantine. It is a propaganda book based on myths and folklore stolen from other cultures to mentally enslave people.
No crucifixion, no resurrection, probably not even a jesus, means christianity is a myth. Atheists don't "apply the bible to today" that is the point of atheism. We don't believe in the bible, a god, christianity. We apply logic, sound reasoning, facts and REAL history, and REAL science, to today.
So you can throw a hissy fit if you want, but there is no god. It's the christians that apply the bible to today. It's the christians that take it out of context. And it's YOU that apply revisionist history to fit a narrative, a predetermined outcome. The old testament is NOT an accurate historical account of the jewish people. That is a flat out bald faced lie on your part. Even if the new testament is a guide for christian values, WHICH IT IS NOT, christians don't abide by those supposed values. Christianity isn't peaceful. It's prejudice, racist, homophobic, sexist, hateful, murderous, criminal, violent, and completely and utterly dishonest! It is responsible for child molesting, slavery, discrimination, murder, and genocide! It has destroyed whole cultures. So don't hand me your false indignation! Fuck christianity!

I almost wish I would get

I almost wish I would get religious door knockers where I live, but they tend to avoid my neighborhood/city :)

Not because we are rude, or will shove a gun in their face, but more because where I live is very liberal and most people either are atheist/agnostic or just plain do not care. I would also like to think well educated, but that may be a stretch anywhere in the US...

The nearest large succesful church to my neighborhood is non denominational, and they put on a concert like show with music and light/smoke effects to be able to build their audience and skimp on the preaching and "god conversations." Not that I approve of that church, but I have almost gone to that church out of curiosity and for a free "concert."

But yeah, out of almost any regular here, I most hope that religious door knockers make the mistake of knocking on Mykcob's door.

Awwww.... Wish I hadn't gotten to this party so late. Dang-it! Really not much more for me to add that hasn't already been covered. Oh, well. Shucks, phooey, fiddlesticks, and other profanities. Well, if nothing else, I suppose I could reinforce a couple of points already made...

Yep! The "bible" was written for the people in that time period and does not apply to today's society. By golly, young lady, I couldn't agree more. Allllll-thooooough..... Hmmm.... Are you seriously suggesting that the bible you use today was actually fully compiled and available for mass distribution to the general population (the vast majority of which were totally illiterate/uneducated) during the time period the events supposedly happened?...... (I'll just let that one sink in for a moment...)

Apply it to the bottom of a door to stop it blowing shut. Apply it to the short leg of a table. Apply to the kindling when starting a fire. Apply it to forcefully to the head of a Jehovah's Witless. I've even applied a Bible to a cockroach.

The Bible has many useful applications in the contemporary world. I'm sure you can think of many others.

Some bibles, in effort to drive down cost of printing them, use toxic chemicals such as Bisphenol-A (BPA) or Bisphenol S (BPS), that rub off the pages and can seep into our skin. While using a bible as TP is about as good of use for a bible as anything. Make sure its not the physically toxic kind of bible, (instead of just the mentally toxic,) if used as TP.
