When I went to register on AR, it wanted both a display name and a user name.
I don't understand the difference.

The user name is the name that needs to be used to send a private message, and to my knowledge can not be changed. The display name is the name that is put on your posts, and can be changed.
However, if you change your display name to something other than your user name, it can make it difficult for people to send you a private message.
The private message issue should be fixed now.
