Atheist or just a confused believer

I heard these two people who claim to be atheists arguing. The first one asked the other why he decided to leave his faith or what made him an atheist. The second one said that the reason was that he hates god and does not think god exists because if there is a god, then he would not have suffered so much. He then became emotional and started to sound angry as he went on to narrate all the bad experiences that he had in life and said that all his prayers were left unheard. Because of this, he started to lose faith and realize that there is really no god that loves him. The first guy told him that he was just probably carried away by his bitterness towards god and that, based on his reaction when he talked about these things, it seemed to him that he was acting like a whining child who is simply upset because his parents did not give him what he wanted. He also said that hating god does not necessarily make one an atheist. It simply means you hate god. Therefore, how could he hate something that he claims to believe is non-existent? The first guy added that the other just does not fully understand the term atheist and is confusing it to hating god. Does anyone else here have a similar experience? What's your take on this?

It's all stages, actually.

It's all stages, actually. You go from having doubts, rebelling, getting angry you've been lied to, then on to critical analysis, study, discussion, comparing, more studying. And finally, perhaps, you become a confident atheist.

At least that's how it hapenned to me.

Yeah, I guess that's the case

Yeah, I guess that's the case with the second guy. I personally did not go through the stage of being angry to god. I was feeling pretty "blessed" when I was starting to learn more about religion and realize how silly and dangerous its doctrines really are.
