VP Mike Pence hears voices, but should that be considered schizophrenia, as the psychiatrists' DSM would have it? Fox News calls it mockery, both of Pence and of his religious beliefs. Joy Behar of The View calls it mental illness when he claims that he and Jesus chat. this accusation is of course highly offensive to theists. it is, OTOH, prevailing in the secular community.
according to an article in The Atlantic, "God's Plan For Mike Pence," (McKay Coppins, January/February 2018 issue), https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2018/01/gods-plan-for-mike-..., there is PLENTY for secular Americans to be concerned about. Pence's humble demeanor can be traced to his biblical view of the servant-master relationship. it is this outlook that enables Pence to act as his Master's voice, a loyal lapdog, while steadfastly enduring Trump's ridicule and disrespect of his temperament, the public persona he wears like a second skin.
what appears outwardly as an Imitatiton-of-Christ-like humility could rather be interpreted as the hubris of a man certain that his god not only has a plan for him but that the son of his god carries on regular conversations with him -- he truly has the arrogance of the genuinely god-fearing Evangelical to admit to hearing the voice of Jesus, without fear of being labeled insane. further, he has helped to create an atmosphere wherein such sincerely-held beliefs are taken seriously by the multitude.
