Adventists and Ellen G White

I recently got into a debate with a family friend over his beliefs as a seventh day Adventist. Here was his larger argument when I confronted the teachings of their prophet Ellen G White:

Brandon Grady I want to thank you for all your post! Some folk might not like someone making all these negative comments but a wise man once said, "ALL publicity is good publicity as long as it's not your own obituary"! So even though you seem to thoroughly dislike Jesus Christ, Christianity and ESPECIALLY Ellen White you are still doing a good job keeping this post and Ellen White before the people. These types of attacks are nothing new of course. Ellen White said this about it:
"Leave Sister White in the hands of God. If the work in which she is engaged be of God, it will prosper; otherwise it will come to naught. But remember that your own eternal interests are now at stake. The fatal lethargy upon you must now be broken, or it will result in endless death. “How long halt ye between two opinions? if the Lord be God, follow him; but if Baal, then follow him.” In Christ’s stead, I beseech you to pray as you never prayed before, to seek earnestly for faith and love, that seem to be almost banished from the earth. Live each day as in the sight of God.." RH August 28, 1883, par. 22
So has her work come to naught? Well let's see... I know many years ago the Great Controversy had been translated into over 70 different languages and the new translations keep increasing! This book is a WORLD WIDE best seller and I know at one time (and I believe is still the case now) the only book out selling it world wide is the Bible its self! Ellen White is also the Most translated American author! As a result of her work the SDA church has prospered and is one of very few world wide denominations currently at 18 Million strong! It seems to me the obvious answer to the question is NO because her work has definitely produced much good fruit!! As for her being a true prophet.. There are at least 7 Biblical test of a prophet and she passes them all with flying colors!! One of the clearest examples of a true prophet is found in Isaiah 8:20 (KJV) To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them. As you can see from the above quote she is also quoting Scripture, 1 Kings 18:21 and you will find that ALL through her writings! She ALWAYS points us back to the Bible and to Christ! She says, "I'm the lesser light He is the greater Light!! For hours she would be in vision pointing to verses in the Bible and reciting them word for word all the while looking up to heaven. Candles and mirrors were held up to her mouth and there was no breath coming out! Very strong men tried to move her but they were not even able to get her pinky finger to budge! All of these things were done by severe critic's like yourself who wanted with all their hearts to prove her to be a fake!! Everyone of them failed!!
Brandon, I've know you since you were just a baby and I've known a lot of your family much longer than that! I can honestly say I love you and your family very much! Your friendship and theirs is very important to me. I have shared the very same feelings as you in times past. I'm ashamed to admit it but I have sat around with different members of your family and other friends as we roasted Ellen White!! As I've reflected on those times it actually caused me to read and study her writings along with the Bible! In doing that I have been amazed at how much clearer the Word of God is! I have a friendship with my loving Savior Jesus Christ that words cannot describe!! Criticize if you like all I can say is He is very real and I've never had more peace and assurance of the future!
I must say I'm rather surprised that you would take time out of your happy go lucky life put forth all the effort to post all this. I mean criticizing over mustard, corsets, thin people etc.. are these really the things bother you about her writings? She had a very complicated task before her. Not only to counsel on the situations of her day but also all down through time.. Btw you do know that she never even called her self a prophet and when she was shown what she would have to do she actually preferred DEATH!?? However when she saw the frown of Jesus she said she NEVER wanted to see Him frown at her again! She fell into extreme darkness for many days after that! It wasn't until after much repentance, prayer and even lots of people praying over her that she finally saw the light again... she also counsels about people being over weight too. So once again it's a balance. As for counsel about doctors, did you know that the 3rd leading cause of death in our country is due to medication/wrong diagnosis? Back in Bible times they used natural remedies now they use far to much UNatural remedies. Socrates said, "Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food." So even worldly minds can recognize that importance. So some things apply to people in her day and others more to us today! It's important to read the whole body of work and not just "cherry pick" things here and there. You know king Solomon said in Eccl 11:10 that "Childhood and youth are vanity"! And that "ALL is vanity"! And he was the wisest man to ever live and also a prophet! That sounds like some pretty crazy proclamations and that's just one of many such texts in the Bible! That's why must understand the full context.
Well it's late and I must get to bed. I will leave you with these verses... John 14: 6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. John 10:9
I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture. Matt. 7:13-14 Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it. John 10:10 The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.
The ONLY hope of eternal life is through Jesus Christ... Please chose life my friend! God Bless!!

This is the blasphemy guy

This is the blasphemy guy again, I suppose.

Listen, no one is going to read all that stuff, and USE PARAGRAPHS LIKE I TOLD YOU!!!!!

We generally refer to the

We generally refer to the user currently known as blasphemy as Kenny. He has had several different names and for some reason that one stuck in everyone's head, fyi.

Kenny it is. Other words come

Kenny it is. Other words come to mind too. Is there any way to improve his grammar and punctuation, including, but not limited to, paragraphs?

The grammar is from a copy

The grammar is from a copy and paste. The long ridiculous argument was presented to me by a seventh say Adventist. I merely wanted similar critical thinkers to see what I, as a raised seventh day Adventist, heard. As well as asking what similar minds think of the type of argument that was presented to me.

Sorry that was a copy and

Sorry that was a copy and paste from a debate I started with an Adventist. So the paragraphs are as was given to me.

LoL, sorry for the late reply

LoL, sorry for the late reply. 70 actually. But that's not at all high for such a long post. :)

I don't think it is, I think

I don't think it is, I think it is a different person. The problem I see, is that there isn't any kind of question in all of it.

Actually this is not a Kenny.

Actually this is not a Kenny.

I just got myself into a debate with a friend of the family about the 'prophet' of the seventh day Adventists. I personally can't stand being quoted the bible on matters concerning it. Of course the cannon is going to try to support the cannon. I wanted to know how my fellow critical and rational thinkers respond to such claims.

Brandon Grady's picture
In other words, I'm looking

In other words, I'm looking for any insight if any is to be given regarding a debate I have taken on. Obviously it it is quoting an awful lot of scripture which anyone can do. I am specifically referring to any insight one would have on specifics of a religions' prophets, in this case Seventh day Adventists.

I guess i proposed my post in

I guess i proposed my post in the wrong room? I am currently in a debate in a different social media outlet. What I posted in this forum was an argument given to me on the correctness of Ellen G White, in the understanding of a Seventh Day Adventist. The religion I was raised in and have been separate from since my teens.

Ok, thank you for the further

Ok, thank you for the further context, now I have some idea what you are looking for. I am personally unfamiliar with Seventh Day Adventists, but I will try to see if I notice anything obviously contradictory.

Okay, I have found a website

Okay, I have found a website which you may be able to use as a resource:

http://www.exadventist.com/home/prophet/tabid/55/default.aspx

Now, that said, it is very unlikely you will be able to sway someone in thrall, as that is usually next to impossible with any of the more cultish religious sects.

I agree Travis, I am still

I agree Travis, I am still curious if anyone has any thoughts they may want to add to this type of argument. I want to respond with more debate however it seems like pissing up a rope.

Travis Hedglin's picture
I would probably wind up

I would probably wind up stressing the point that following any person so completely, no matter how one might feel about them, is a project destined to fail. The entirety of the debate, so far as I can tell, has been the infallibility and perfection of this White person. This should send up alarming sirens and red flags to anyone even passingly familiar with humans, as none of them are close to that level of reliability, and anyone following one like a lost sheep is more likely wind up fleeced than fed. I would more generally advocate that one only leave one entrance into their mind(reason), and keep the rest of it rather closed, as it is one hell of a lot easier to shovel shit in than it is to get it out.

thank you Travis you are

thank you Travis you are pretty much telling me what I've already concluded however it is nice to hear it from someone else. That wasn't meant to be a back handed statement

Bgrady--I already spoke to my

Bgrady--I already spoke to my lawyer and we are suing you for 550 million dollars. Furthermore I challenge you to a duel at any 7 day advent church with swords and libidos a blazing . How dare you impersonate my integrity but disguising yourself as me (Kenny)-the most handsome and intelligent human being in the universe. The only thing relevant from my understanding of 7 day advents is they believe in 7 day creation and the world is 6000 years old. Ben Carson second to Donald Trump in the polls -Donald Trump amazing and crazy isn't it- and funny too. Ben Carson is a neurosurgeon does not believe in evolution. Ben Carson is a 7 day advent-hahahahahahahhahhhaha -funny ok-laugh--laugh laugh hahhaha. But imagine Ben Carson President of the United States......God Bless
