The Sunset Limited (2011)

The Sunset Limited

In this movie, two men with opposing beliefs confront each other inside an apartment. The Sunset Limited is based on a play written by Cormac McCarthey. The two men in the film belong to different racial backgrounds – one is a black, enacted by Samuel L Jackson while the other is a white, enacted by Tommy Lee Jones.

The black man saves the white man from committing suicide, after which the two get into a conversation about the importance of life – with the former thinking he has found himself in this situation for a particular reason and the latter thinking life is too miniscule and everything must eventually end in death. While Jones continues to assert that all things in the world are bound to perish and thus one need not invest beyond a point, Jackson says there is a god who ensures all of his subjects experience troubles and falls so they can earn their place in paradise. Jackson substantiates his belief by saying he once committed a murder and distanced himself from god but now he feels much closer as he has saved Jones’ life.

In the end however, Jackson is unable to convince Jones against committing suicide and the latter leaves the apartment while the former continues to wonder why god would land him in such a situation if he knew from before than Jones was going to commit suicide nonetheless.
