Horrible Day in American History

Well as hard as it is to believe we now have an ultra conservative government. Trump and pence are about the worst thing that could have happened to people of color, planned parenthood, the lbgt community, the poor and of course atheists.

Seeing franklin graham and the masses talk about how this god hand picked the self proclaimed racist, homophobe, rapist, womaizer, liar and tax dodger, etc and we now have our country back is enough to make one want to denounce their citizenship.

Hearing him talk about unity can only suggest that he is a sociopath or lives in an alternate universe!

I for one wish for him to fail and maybe this is what it took to bring down the right wing lunatic fringe.

Of there were a god, he would have shit for brains!

I don't know where this

I don't know where this 'ultra conservative' meme comes from. Many conservatives distanced from him because he was NOT really a conservative but a kind of loose cannon that brings a bunch of stuff together.

No one can be sure what he will do, his platform is a mix and not fully consistent, but then again the cabinet is far from a group of yes-men/women so we'll see what happens.

The one good thing is that he is the first politician to successfully push back against all the political correctness intimidation of the left, maybe some debates can now occur without being shut down by charges of racist, sexist, xenophobe, homophobe etc.

I did not anticipate Trump specifically but for the past couple of years as Obama and the left in general arrogantly pushed more and more of mainstream America's buttons (and pushed quite a few of my own buttons as well) something had to give. This was a surprise, though.

You wrote "his platform is a

You wrote "his platform is a mix". I would argue that his platform is incoherent nonsense, and his comments are sound bites and bumper stickers slogans. Example, the slogan about making America great again. When was it great? When did it cease to be great? Who decided it isn't great? What criteria did they use to make this determination? What is his plan to "make it" great again? I think the answers are: Not sure. Don't know. I did. None. And my personal favorite... No plans.

As bad as Trump is, it could

As bad as Trump is, it could be even worse if he, for whatever reason, had to be replaced by Mike Pence.
I'm convinced that Trump is an powerhungry egomaniac, who is only catering to the Christian Right to gain power. But Pence on the other hand is the real deal, who actually believes in Creation, Heaven and Hell, and so on. Such a person could be far worse as the President. A person like Trump could wake up in a bad mood and pick a fight with a country, while a true believer like Pence could wake up from a dream where "god" told him to launch the nukes...

I hope that these 4 years will act as a wake up call for tolerance, humanism, rationality, etc.

I am really tired of the

I am really tired of the "bait and switch" tactics of Democrats and Republicans concerning voters. With politicians public and private faces one cannot trust what they will actually do once they get in office. To find out who they truly represent, one has to examine their donor list. No surprise considering the Citizens United Supreme Court decision in Jan 2010. These lesser of two evils elections are getting old.

jay-h's picture
There is a truth to the

There is a truth to the concern about bait and switch, or promising one thing to one group and a different thing to another group.

Hillary threatened to try to screw with the Constitution to get CItizens United overturned, and I'm glad she did not get that chance. It hopefully headed off some movement by the election commission to restrict the speech of popular bloggers by defining their blogs as political donations and assessing an arbitrary cash value to their speech. Whether you're an individual or a group, you can't have free speech if the government can suppress it as a 'political donation'

I'm way past Trump. My

I'm way past Trump. My concern is for the environmental destruction his presidency can cause and the people he has chose to lead programs that require knowledge in that field. The depts of Energy, Education and Housing are now being lead by people who are clueless about any of these things. I work in Mortgage and finance. My job is not only to originate Mortgages, but to NOT do what was done to fuck the economy up in the first place. Without proper leadership, anything can happen. Ben Carson the former surgeon is now the head of that department. Like.. what? Then there is Rick Perry.. a man who is about as bright as night. He now leads the Dept of Energy. The people who handle our nukes.

These are scary times.

I am curious how far Pence

I am curious how far Pence will go to get religion in school class rooms. Will be interesting to watch.

SecularSonOfABiscuitEater's picture
Pence definitely seems

Pence definitely seems motivated to get that done. Although the left still has the filibuster and other techniques to temper the right, The conservatives are the overwhelming majority now. If we ever see an attempt to put prayer in school, now's the time. I Imagine the rate of home-schooled kids would increase.

I Disagree. If I remember

I Disagree. If I remember correctly, Mr. Pumpkin appointed Richard Pryor as a personal advisor to mister excitement himself, Ben Carson so the HUD Department is well under control.

And don't worry about Education. The billionaire running that department believes in voucher programs to fund christian schools... so obviously pulling money out of public school funding to support the god squad right wing nut bags [nutsacks?] christian madrasas cannot hurt the already terrible status of education in America. Can I get an Amen?

SecularSonOfABiscuitEater's picture

Well put lol. We don't see eye to eye on Ben Carson but when it comes to education... I forsee an effort to push for a Ken Ham science textbook if you know what I mean. That would be some major bullshit.

jay-h's picture
Carson, I suspect was chosen

Carson, I suspect was chosen partly for his personal experience, growing up in government public housing and really achieved something (other than his religious nuttiness). Quite different from the Democrat message which really encourages failure and government dependency. The rising stars on the left are obsessed with complaining about oppression (both real and imagined) instead of taking charge of one's life.

EPA has evolved into an agency with strong discretionary powers, and an ideologically pure makeup strongly aligned with pressure groups. Some sort of challenging dynamic needs to be introduced (not necessarily this one, but who knows) to provide multiple viewpoints . Every course of action has its cost.

Good points all.... Not. Did

Good points all.... Not. Did you actually think about these comments before you posted them Never?

Clearly, we do not want and certainly don't need anyone with management experience to head HUD, a federal agency with a FY 2017 budget of $49 BILLION [with a B] employing about 10,000 employees.

No, according to Never what we need is a right wing nutbag with NO directly related work experience or related education or experience because... because what could possibly go wrong. After all, at one time in his life he lived in public housing.

Here is a hint Never... I once lived in England. That doesn't qualify me to be King of England.

Let's hope the US system can

Let's hope the US system can constrain Trump (who wouldn't even accept the result if he lost, he said!!)

An egotist leading superstitious extremists. And they could have had a professional politician who actually cares that people aren't corrupt. Now there is only the often corrupt politicians of the two houses to contain the excesses and mistakes to come.

It was bad enough trying to contain Russia, China and all the authoritarian states. Now we must wait four years for the US to rejoin the international community of democracies.

A vote for Trump was a vote for a bunch of corrupt politicians and fervent religious extremists led by an egotist. Hillary was far, far better. In fact, anyone who can empathise and who is honest would have been better. Trump shouldn't even be allowed to directly employ people much less lead a nation.

I think the sky has fallen

I think the sky has fallen for the Chicken Littles who cannot understand what is happening in the larger sense. But, ignorance is the result of big government grooming it into an entire populace, as evidenced by the popular vote. It was up to the Electoral to bring the real message into each and every household to experience, react to, ponder, react some more, and realize it's real.

It's called change.

People are easily made afraid of their own shadows and the liberal landscape is all fear mongering of the most entertaining kind. It's better than books and movies. I like it. The change to them is intrinsically scary, never mind who is hosting it.

Oh noooosssssss, Trump is gonna kill is all!!!

Imbeciles.

"People are easily made afraid of their own shadows and the liberal landscape is all fear mongering of the most entertaining kind. It's better than books and movies."

True. Believing their own propaganda. Like the reporter breathlessly proclaiming that MLKs statue had been removed from the Oval Office. It had not, though Churchill, banished by Obama, had been returned.

If I'm smart enough to

If I'm smart enough to rationalize that god is not real, perhaps I'm also smart enough to conclude that an authoritarian person who ignores the facts of science and reality is not a good choice for POTUS.

That is if you don't consider

That is if you don't consider running the country by executive order authoritarianism including declaring what our opinions were to be. And fabricating 'treaties', issuing directives which were never voted on by Congress, some very foolish, by completely bypassing the Constitutional procedures and safeguards.

I consider that deeply authoritarian.

MCDennis's picture

My Dad once told me, "Don't talk politics to people. You will not change their minds and they will not change yours. You're on a hiding for nothing!"
Thus we will agree to differ and watch history unfold over the next 2 - 4 years.

MCDennis's picture
I disagree. Mr. Pumpkin will

I disagree. Mr. Pumpkin will have a legacy far longer than 4 years. He will make at least one Supreme Court appointment. He might get to make 2 or more. And what a stacked court decides on issues including free speech, abortion rights, and separation of church and state is anyone's guess and something that EVERY atheist has reason to be deeply concerned about.

Well...Never Happened and

Well...Never Happened and Pitar are speaking for the right wing nut jobs and frankly Pitar, you are still an asshole for attacking me, so I am not surprised at your ignorance. Never happened, sounds like a right wing leaning, liberal bashing troll.

Trump has 75 pending lawsuits. He is mentally unstable, has already started to dismantle the ACA, he raped a 13 year old girl and she dropped the lawsuit when she received death threats from trump supporters. How many people were punched and beaten at Hillary rallies? ZERO! Trump mocked disabled people and is a pussy grabber, golden shower, prostitute loving sociopath. The list is endless and I a sick of hearing the lesser of two evils crap.

You don;t have to like Hillary, but the emails were lies, the russians did in fact rig the election. etc. etc.

This is how Hitler came into power. And YES Pence is a nightmare waiting to happen. I sincerely hope that something happens where they are all gone. Obama could have declared trump as mentally incompetent before leaving office, other than that I believe he was a GREAT president.

This is an atheist group and I don't come here to hear shit from Pitar and people like him. They are trolls.

Christians, conservatives and anyone who voted for trump are my enemy. The only problem I see is that democrats need to bet more balls. Fuck compromise, especially now. Never give trump anything he wants. I DO want him to fail, and if his behavior is any indication, it shouldn't take too long. he is already attacking the poor, which is me, and I don't take kindly to that kind of terrorism! Ugh! Some of you people need to wake up!

My poor friend, you actually believe the propaganda? What evidence do you have that trump will be bad for black people, gay people, women, and so on? You just believe this because George Soros told you so don't you?
Alas, reason has left this man, and he is but a brainwashed zombie.

or that the Torah is confirmed by a farmer in Minnesota who is dowsing for gigants.

This is an atheist forum. I'm

This is an atheist forum. I'm interested in discussions about the role of religion in politics, but there are other forums for divisive, partisan debate about American politics.

Also, I believe that the terms "right" and "left" are outdated, simplistic, and misleading. In America you seem to label everything religious as right-wing, but that's not universal. In political debates in New Zealand, I found myself arguing in favor of free markets, individual freedom, and smaller government against Methodists, Catholics, and Salvationists who were several steps to the left of Marx and Lenin on economic and social policy. Politics is much more complex than can be expessed along a simple left-right axis.

I'm sure there are atheists at every point on the political spectrum. Because they are atheists, we should at least assume that they chose their political positions intelligently after long and careful thought, and not simply because they are "trolls" or "assholes."

Most, if not all republicans

Most, if not all republicans are believers in god, and most are of the christian faith. I perceive this to be a threat to atheists. That will be the next liberty to go. There belief system or be waterboarded. Tonight trump the Nazi laid out his new torture program, so we are back to the bush ear, but on steroids!

Many atheists would not belong to a party like the republicans, as their beliefs would be opposite. History has shown this. Every republican in my fifty years has embraced the churches which are right wing leaning and a strong belief on god which affects policy, like abortion, healthcare, the LBGT community and most importantly the climate. If I have offended any republican here, than I am glad! You have voted for a monster who in 5 days has already silenced the EPA, passed the keystone pipeline and he Dakota pipeline, has two ultra conservatives ready to take over the supreme court and overturn Roe Vs. Wade. Not to mention that Obamacare was overturned and many will die because of this. These are facts, and if me bringing up politics is upsetting you or anyone else, too dam bad!

It is about jobs, healthcare and civil rights, period. I could care less about the troops, the flag, the bible, protecting the unborn and most of all hurting someone's point of view here. I am fighting this monster anyway I can. I have attended protests, written letters and called senators. I was on the Rachel Maddow show yesterday as she showed us protesting.

Sitting and being complacent is not in my nature, neither is worrying that you didn't like me calling out the obvious trolls and that asshole Pitiful pitar!

Take that!
