So if you believe that Adam

So if you believe that Adam and Eve are historical figures do you believe the accounts of Genesis to be historical as well? Like god making the earth, sun and stars in 7 days? And there being a talking serpent? I'm curious to how literally you take the bible

Yes - Genesis is historical. God did make the heavens and the earth in 6 (24 hr) days...and rested on the 7th. God repeated this 6-day 24-hour creation statement when he gave the 10 commandments to the Israelites when they were in the desert. The talking serpent is a reference to satan, who deceived Eve. This is how sin entered the world and made a huge mess of things.

If you like I can post some links that explain evidence for a young earth. A young earth is the target of everyone who believes in evolution. The evidence for a young earth is very compelling.

As I read the Bible more and more, it makes sense to read it literally. Although not all parts are meant to be read in a literal sense (Song of Songs for example).

Sure, I'll have a look at it. Though I'm a strong believer in evolution and our understanding that the planet is 4.5 billion years old, but I'll still check it out :)

Thanks for being open minded. If you keep that up, you will go far.

I also recommend checking out videos of Dr. Jason Lisle. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CvRy6AjeyLc
He is very smart, witty and makes strong case for young earth. He also goes into how to think about evidence and faith.

That Institute for Creation Research (icr.org) link is also loaded with FAITH (Falsehoods Assumptions Innuendos Treachery and Hogwash). Everything on that page is so completely, absolutely, totally, utterly WRONG! It is all lies, falsehoods, disinformation, data forgery, dishonest libel, inaccurate and mendacious distortion of reality, I could go on.

Do you even know what the real Ten Commandments are?

The age of the Earth is 4.54

The age of the Earth is 4.54 ± 0.05 billion years (4.54 × 109 years ± 1%). This age may represent the age of the Earth's accretion, of core formation, or of the material from which the Earth formed. The universe is almost 14 billion years old.

Until you can deal with these facts,, and form some fundamental grasp of reality you're not going to have any meaningful discussions on here sorry. Here is a link for you if you ever feel the urge to learn some objective facts about the universe and the earth.

http://www.talkorigins.org/

The site also a large database of creationist pseudoscience, and debunks them with scientific facts.

"A young earth is the target of everyone who believes in evolution. The evidence for a young earth is very compelling."

Both of those claims are erroneous.

"Yes - Genesis is historical."

If Genesis is historical, then why is it the only accounting? Why are there other accountings hundreds, even THOUSANDS, of years older? Why is the oldest copy of the OT in Hebrew only dates back to 450 BCE? Why do the oldest copies of the OT in Greek date back to 650 BCE. And even older copies in other languages that date back even further?

So what marked the passage of days before god created the Sun and Moon on the fourth day?

Are you really serious about young Earthism? What do you think about glacier core samples from the Antarctic that go back over 2 million years? When did people first populate the Americas and Australia?

Most biblical scholars,

Most biblical scholars, secular and theist hold that Adam and Eve are purely fictional. The Genesis stories are fables, not history. Myths about the first humans go back much further in history than Genesis, which like the most of the Old Testament, the Pentateuch in particular, in the Christian bible, is believed to be compiled around 700 BCE.

The Genesis story is a rehash of older creation stories that include the Summerian Enuma Elish (dated to 2100 BCE) in which Marduk, god of war and storm defeats the primordial and chaotic forces of the sea goddess Tiamat and creates the world from her corpse, slicing her huge body in two, using the upper half to form the firmament, the lower half the earth, with waters above and below, and creating man to serve his fellow gods, by mixing dirt with the blood of an oafish consort of Tiamat.

Eight hundred years after the compilation of the Pentateuch, the Christians opportunistically seize on their concept of Original Sin in Eden to ensure that everyone, everyone, ever born is tainted and in need of their saviour's redemption.

The Garden of Eden myth deals only with disobedience to God, which is immediately punished; men forced to live by the sweat of their brow (no more free lunches in Eden), women to suffer extreme pain in childbirth, snakes (to lose their legs!!) to crawl on their bellies forever and to be in continual strife against man and woman. All fable devices to explain how things come about.

And further, the actions of Adam and Eve are not referred to as a sin in any way. The first use of the word 'sin' appears in Genesis 4:7 concerning Cain's bitterness at not receiving God's blessing. It's over an issue of pride as a prelude to murder, which, according to Judaism, along with insulting people, remains the greatest offence against God.

Gaining knowledge of good and evil was always paltry in comparison to murder until the Christians needed a reason to validate a sacrifice of Jesus that implicated everyone.

Oh dear this is just a string

Oh dear this is just a string of unevidenced claims, but far more worrying is you seem to be suggesting the Genesis myth in the bible is "literally" true.

Humans like all living things evolved slowly over billions of years, this as well evidenced an objective scientific fact as any science has. Denying it now is risible. I don't care what "all biblical scholars think " unless they can objectively evidence their beliefs, if they can then demonstrate this evidence, if not then it isn't evidence but a fallacious appeal to authority.

I am sorry, I am with Cognostic here. My first reaction to your post was hilarity..had to be sarcasm, right? But it isn't. You actually are searching for justification for your belief.

How anyone in the 21st Century with even a grade (primary) school education, can , as an adult take a collection of contradictory, misogynistic, racist stories and proclaim them reality?

I heard Dreamtime stories from various friends and Tribal Elders...and they are as valid an explanation as your "Adam and Eve" . And, of course, predate your account by a few thousand years.

You also didn't seem to see the genetic complications of Adam impregnating a clone of himself..except for the genitalia apparently. This I must admit had me gasping on the floor and thanking Arakish for the Third Commandment of AR. You really cannot see the problem there? The mind boggles.

Well, enjoy your beliefs, just keep them well away from schools, legislatures or any form of welfare...like being tax free.

  3. Therefore, the Bible is true.

We can barely go 24 hours on here without an apologist starting a thread using such woeful arguments, the really hilarity is after weeks of back and forth, when they tell you how blinkered you are, because you refuse to give in under the tedious weight of repetition of their claims.

Just reading through this

Just reading through this forum makes me feel better. I just had an honest conversation with a woman today about how the military is training soldiers to visualize where they will be deployed by sending their spirits into the place they are going. And I was called a snob for saying I don’t think humans can do that! Hahaha
