@Leper: What is it in

@Leper: What is it in religions that justifies, encourages or promotes rape?

Let's see. How about a powerful and exclusively male priesthood class that combines a celibacy rule with a virgin cult that belittles and denigrates women by measuring them against the impossible ideal of Mary?

Do you consider Islamic State/ISIS to be religiously inspired? They engaged in rape, sex slavery, and human trafficking on a vast scale. Rape was also used a a weapon of war in the religiously inspired "ethnic cleansing" campaigns in the Balkans.

And by the way, sex with a child under the legal age of consent is statutory rape. Children don't have the emotional, physical, or legal competence to consent to sex.

Child marriage is a form of rape. That is especially associated with Islam, Hinduism, certain Christian sects, and some forms of Mormonism.

Another factor that encourages rape and abuse is the tendency of religious groups to conceal such behavior and protect the perpetrators. There have been countless such cases in the Catholic church of course, but many other Christian sects, including even the Salvation Army, are guilty. Read the report of Australia's Royal Commission on Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse.

Algebe: "Let's see. How about a powerful and exclusively male priesthood class that combines a celibacy rule with a virgin cult that belittles and denigrates women by measuring them against the impossible ideal of Mary?"

I don't even know what all this means. I'll just say priests aren't powerful, nor all male. There is no celibacy rule but for nuns. What is a virgin cult? What does it mean? I haven't met Christian in my life (with the exception of priests) who cares about Mary at all. But you're right she was a great woman. But what does that have to do with rape?

Algebe: "Do you consider Islamic State/ISIS to be religiously inspired?"

I don't know what 'religiously inspired' means, but I don't think they have anything to do with Islamic Scripture and extremely little with legal rulings so they seem irrelevant to this discussion imo.

Algebe:" Rape was also used a a weapon of war in the religiously inspired "ethnic cleansing" campaigns in the Balkans."

And so it is used in war regardless of the religion or no religion, but is this actually part of the religion? Or just part of human behaviour?

Algebe: "And by the way, sex with a child under the legal age of consent is statutory rape. Children don't have the emotional, physical, or legal competence to consent to sex."

How old children? What does this have to do with religion?

Algebe: "Child marriage is a form of rape."

That's simply not true.

First of all it would be important to know all the facts and statistics to discuss this realistically and secondly, is this something different from any other group that people may form?

@Leper: I don't even know what all this means.

Then you need to get an education or at least read a newspaper occasionally. Have you not heard of the Marist Brothers? That's a Catholic sect dedicated to the Virgin Mary--also one of the most evil organized child rape cults in recent history.

"...Priests are not powerful"?
Are you serious? Historically they have dominated communities and entire countries across Europe and the Americas. Evangelical preachers today have huge political influence in the United States. Priests have conspired with dictators and despots to oppress the people in Russia and Latin America. The Pope waves his hand and billions of people are forbidden access to contraception and prophylaxis.

"...I don't think they have anything to do with Islamic Scripture"
LOL. Look up the "No true Scotsman" fallacy. ISIS has everything to do with Islam. They are its purest and most extreme expression. Every religion has the potential to create an ISIS because they give men power while making them responsible only to god, which is the same as saying responsible to nothing.

"...is this actually part of the religion? Or just part of human behaviour? "
From the Crusades down to ethnic cleansing in the Balkans, religions have licensed mass rape and other atrocities. Learn some history.

May I ask, hypothetically speaking, if some evidence was found in some empirically determined way, that Muhammed did indeed rape.... would you speak out against him and condemn those very actions?

Again, this is a hypothetical.

Yes, @Random, I would condemn

Yes, @Random, I would condemn it.
