Science, a concept few theists want to understand

I am a great fan of Nathan W Pyle.
His work has gentle simplicity of reducing the human condition to absurdity.

I figured the definition he pictures, of the Scientific Method would be simple enough even for the Apollos, Capellis and Jos of these forums to comprehend.

No doubt they will still find a a way to wrap ignorance around themselves but...well, I tried.

That's because the scientific method is based on humility and honesty, while religion is driven by pride and deceit. Individual scientists may be guilty of pride and deceit, but they are always thwarted by the self-regulating authority of the scientific method itself. Dishonest claims and wrongful behavior in religion are protected and sustained by unaccountable authority.

Awwww, stick it up your bunghole, already! Science schmience!... *waving hand in dismissal*... That's all you atheists ever do. Science this, science that, blah-blah-blah. Well, I have you know all your beloved science and all your scientists you worship as your gods are worthless. You all have even ADMITTED how often science gets things WRONG. I would laugh, but it is so sad how all you atheists put all your FAITH into something that never gets anything right. I mean, sheesh, your "holy scientists" don't even know how the universe was CREATED.... *rolling eyes*... Yet you want ME and the rest of the world to believe science has ALL THE ANSWERS? Puh-leeeeease! Oh, and you just wait until I drive my luxury SUV home from the airport so I can get on my laptop computer and search the internet. Then I will PROVE to all of you science-worshiping atheists exactly how unreliable your precious science really is. Humph!... *arms folder across chest*... *nose in the air*...

Hey! What the hell??? Who gave me a Disagree on my last post?... *looking around room*... Cog! Was it you?.... Oh, and don't even THINK about slinging that poo at me that you are hiding behind your back...

Howdy! Welcome to the AR. How's it hangin'? In the interest of avoiding confusion, might I inquire as to whom you were addressing with your post? The commom practice around here is to use "@" followed by the member's name at the top of your post. Like I said, it helps keep down the confusion. Good having you with us. Enjoy the fun around here.

Welcome to Atheist republic, a place where us unholy heathens gather.

Another suggestion in keeping this forum understandable is that each post has a number, and sometimes it is convenient to refer to that post number.

Negative, negative, negative! Abort, abort, abort! Don't reference post numbers! Those slimy little bastards have a tendency to change without notice as the threads grow. Confusion will spread even WORSE! It'll be ANARCHY!!!

You don't need science to

You don't need science to disprove religion. Religion disproves itself by its very nature.

It's all in your head. The abstract idea of god is in your head and can be found nowhere else in the known universe.

Invisible and impossible. Your intuition is wrong about faith in invisible and impossible beings.

...ROFLMAO.... Hey, check my profile real quick... *chuckle*... I am literally laughing right now. That post I made regarding science was just me fucking with Old Man.... LOL... Plus, I was trying to beat the theists to the punch on some of the lame "arguments" we get from them so often here. Plus, I'm just a sarcastic asshole... *chuckle*... Aw, man, you are cracking me up. Thanks for the good laugh this morning... *thumbs up*... Again, welcome to the AR. You're gonna love it here.... *still chuckling*...

Edit to add: Hey, Old Man!... *pointing thumb toward Savantar*... New guy here actually thought I was being serious!... LMAO...

OKAY: "Hmmmm. Let's see now. Corpus Colloaum?" (*TICKING A LITTLE BOX ON THE PAPER IN FRONT OF ME) "Check!"

"Frontal lobe?" "Check!" (*Spinning the frontal lobe around in the blood with the back of the pencil.)

"Cerebral Cortex?" (*Noticing the drip of blood eking its way towards my hand and flicking it onto a nearby wall.) "Check!"

"Central Sulcus? "Yep!" (*Ticking another box, yet again.)

"Panetal Lobe? "Looks fine to me." (*Another box ticked.)

"Thalamus? Thalamus? Where the fuck is the thalamus? " (*Picking up the coconut machete and slicing the brain vertically from the frontal lobe to the occipital lobe (*Two more checks!) and opening it into two halves like a large ostrich egg. "Ahhh There it is!" "Check!"

(* The process continues through the cerebellar cortex, cerebellum, medulla, pons, temporal lobe, hypothalamus, and the lateral ventricies)

"Hmmmm? All boxes checked but one?"
"Where in the fuck is the abstract idea of god that is in my head and can be found nowhere else? " (*Picking up the top of my hairy skull from the top of the table and giving it a scratch.) "Where is that god thing?")

"Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha.... THERE IT IS!" It's on the page in front of my face. YOU WROTE IT. Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha .... Joke is on me. Here I am taking apart my brain looking for this missing piece and it was in your brain all this time. Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha .... Joke is on me I guess."

And you KNOW we always have leftover parts and/or missing parts altogether every time we cram all that goop back into your mangey skull. What the hell, dude? How many times do we have to tell you that "search you brain" does NOT mean to literally take it out to study it?.... *yelling down hallway*... Old Man!.. Hey!... "Atheism - the abstract idea that there is no God."

NO

Please Lion IRC, do not be dishonest. There is one, and only one definition of atheist, that we lack a belief in a god or gods.

You, as a theist are making the claim there is a god, I am not convinced because of poor evidence or proof. If you have valid, sane, and rational argumenst and proof, then I will believe there is a god. Until then, I remain unconvinced.

Your tactics are becoming wearisome and testing my patience. And civil demeanor.

@Lion IRC: Some day a theist will enter the site who actually understands the word Atheism. This theist will actually grasp "burden of proof, logic, and reason. The theist will make relevant comments that are going to amaze us all. He will be articulate, concise, and erudite. He will not rely on fallacies of logic or inane assertions and will avoid sounding like a dumb-ass. Some day, there will be a real opportunity to debate.

Just not today!

Kudos OMS, that's very good.

Kudos OMS, that's very good. Though I think some theists will see only two words however, wrong and science.

Theists claim they are obsessed with the truth, yet so many of them come here, and can't or won't see the simple truth, that in science knowing you are wrong about something is a nett gain in knowledge. The more you can do this, the more you have learned. Theism claims to possess the infallible inerrant truth, science relentlessly challenges what we think we know, and so advances our knowledge of reality. The two positions are at odds at least in that.

It is bizarre to not notice, that this reality shows no objective evidence for any deity or anything supernatural. It is even more bizarre IMHO, to notice this, and yet think our best method for validating claims is somehow to blame for this lack of evidence. As if not being able to detect invisible unicorns is somehow a flaw, or limitation of science.

Science can't detect or examine what does not exist, that is a axiomatic. This doesn't of course mean that something is proved to not exist if science can't detect it, but if it is claimed to be beyond science, then how does it differ in any objective way from things that simply don't exist?

Cognostic's picture
@OMS: The theist version of

@OMS: The theist version of science goes something like this. Theists get an idea in their heads and then you go out into the world and find as much information that supports their idea as they can while completely ignoring anything contradictory. They then take all that information and either alter their theology dogma or alter the actual information so that it all fits together and then they call it science. Then, just to finish things off, they make the assertion that scientists are doing the exact same thing.

Human beings have a capacity

Human beings have a capacity to compartmentalize beliefs which conflict. I'm reminded of the joke about the man whose religion dictated that the number of angels who can dance on the head of a pin is exactly eleven. Did he believe it? Yes, absolutely! Eleven! No more- no less!

Did this man actually believe angels exist? No, not really.

Another answer could be; as many as want to, what with angels being non corporeal and all.

I've always wondered why an an angel might want to dance on the head of a pin.

Science can be tested, and

Science can be tested, and also it's well-known that humans control the narrative. Sorry that theists come on here to bother you. Apparently, they even go to Richard Dawkins and Amber Heard events saying "I'm a mormon" even paying for VIP lol. Atheists aren't even represented properly in Hollywood, except for Replicas, and people beg for representation.

Religion is mostly a belief and they see atheists as having a belief. I think stronger arguments for atheists lie with that we are more likely to DO something, because we know no deity or spirit will do anything. Everything is up to us - including in technology and science.

Theists attack technology, and prevention with it. It's kept us from even connecting 911, 999, and 112 to geolocation, yet, advertising platforms and search engines know where we are at all times. It prevents religious communities from alerting victims of incoming disasters or crisis. It's lack of critical thinking.

When I became atheist in June 2017, my thinking cleared up and I took more actions. RELIGION also creates a 'punishment' culture like we have in the USA with the highest prison population instead of a PREVENTATIVE culture. It's barbaric in essence, and people would have to change the *way* they think to embrace atheism and progress.

Hi Christina, welcome to AR.

Hi Christina, welcome to AR.
You said "we are more likely to DO something, because we know no deity or spirit will do anything" which reminds me of an old Jewish story in which an old rabbi is asked why god created atheists.

His answer was, god created atheists to show theists what true morality looked like because when atheists perform a kind act it is without hope of reward or fear of punishment.

He then added that when someone presents a theist with their problems, the theist should not offer to pray for them, but rather behave like an atheist and imagine there is no god and actually DO something to help.

It would be far simpler if they just became atheists.

In the large city where I live there are three large homeless shelters.
All run by Atheists...I mean Theists.
Is it the same where you live?

I am NOT saying Atheist cannot or do not do good.

A major theme running through the Bible is that I AM my brothers keeper.

It would be interesting to compare the square footage of those shelters to the square footage of the homes of the three richest pastors in your area.

The Churches get the grants as they have the funds to do so, they also have the lay clergy as organisers. However as a volunteer in a Soup kitchen in a town 15 minutes from me I can tell you that the the believers are only the top echelon of organisers...and paid. Anecdotally in conversation 7 out of 20 volunteers have no faith and we have a mix of Buddhists, Daoists, Sikhs and a rag bag of assorted lip service christians to fill out the rest.

Maybe Jo, you could volunteer and see for yourself.

If the churches did not have such advantages as tax free funding, a vast established bureaucracy then maybe there would be more room for other organisations.
