The best places to start looking for the meaning of life and the universe are life and the universe. That's really hard work, so people turn to religion to find easy answers.

Religion is a political means to force a swath of ignorant peoples into obedience. It does so by preying upon weak minded people and or intellectual lazy people. It produces a false answer to the question of life by providing a fictitious authority then speaking for said authority and thus dictating to the masses.
I agree with mykob4. Religion is just a means of control. whatever be its definition. (even though it diverges from the OPs question)
