Ricky Gervais co-wrote and co-directed The Invention of Lying, which happens to be a rather ballsy film and tells those things that we are usually afraid to say. Revolving around everything that Gervais cares about, this film may seem ungainly and awkward at first but it is actually quite moving, funny and has a number of brilliant moments. The Invention of Lying serves as a satire for both religion and society and throws light upon many thought-provoking truths.
In the movie, you will be witness to a world where everyone tells the truth – not out of choice, but because nobody knows otherwise. Mark Bellison who is a screenwriter is about to be fired. He is rather unattractive, namely short, chunky and flat nosed, which means he will never get to impressing Anna, the woman of his dreams. He discovers the art of lying when he blurts out a fib by mistake while at the bank. Later, he inculcates the art of lying by creating a fictional account of what heaven is like to give his dying mother solace because she is scared of the eternal void that she believes is awaiting her post death. When the hospital staff believe in his idea of heaven, they pass it around, only to make Bellison appear as a prophet in the neighbourhood. This leads to Bellison finding great success at his workplace as well. But, will any of this mean anything to Anna? Watch The Invention of Lying to find out!
