what i am talking about is the double split experiment showing that conscious observation changes and structures the way atoms act Michio Kaku suggests that this shows that there may be a greater observer ie like a cosmic consciousness god like thing he says if we observe a bunch of atoms and they act in order because of our observation then what is observing us and the universe keeping that in order .

Sorry. I never really read this post. Read part of the first sentence and went onward.

You need to prove the above statement. I have listen to many, many lectures and videos made by Kaku. As far as I can remember, he NEVER said damned thing about a "cosmic consciousness god". Either prove this. Or rescind it. I shall be the first to admit that I may be wrong since I stopped listening to him talk about the same shit he has been talking about for over ten years.

The "DOUBLE SPLIT" experiment

The "DOUBLE SPLIT" experiment shows no such thing. "Split experiment showing that conscious observation changes and structures the way atoms act."

Michio Kaku is a Woo Woo idiot if he asserted such a thing. I am betting he didn't. He said "What if?"

All the double split experiment shows is that when scientists design an experiment to look for particles, they find particles. If they design a study to seek waves, they find waves. It says nothing at all about consciousness effecting the experiment.

Wait.. wait wait... woah! hold on here...

The: "double split" (sic...I hope!) experiment is how you want to argue evidence of a: "cosmic consciousness god?"

That is hilarious, except for the scary thought that I think you actually take it serious. Please tell me you and/or your parents did not spend a lot of money on your education...

Not arguing for it however it is a experiment that logical people like yourself should maybe not laugh at since it is a scientific experiment that has time after time shown that consciousness does have a affect on the world around us also Michio Kaku is a well educated man as you should know and he argues that it is possible that a cosmic consciousness does exist now i am not saying oh this is evidence for god however if Michio Kaku is suggesting this experiment is possibly evidence of a cosmic consciousness then its worth talking about .

The idea of "Cosmic Consciousness" is a theme that has exercised man for centuries.
More recently it has been bastardised as "the Universe" (ask it anything) written about in "The Secret" and subject to countless candle burning, dream catching mystics. Deepak Chopra bases most of his meaningless utterances on the catch phrase "Cosmic Consciousness". So in that sense and practise it's bollocks as Random would say.

The simple answer to the question "Is the Cosmos Conscious"....we don't know....yet.

Is it a "god" as defined by the Abrahamic Books of Goat Herding for Misogynists?

Nope, I do not believe it is.

I was laughing at an error you made, (calling it a double "split" experiment instead of double slit.) A typo likely yes, but one you still seem to not have noticed or realize. And second I was laughing at the gross mischaracterization of the "controversy" around the results of the double slit experiment.

In no way does our "consciousness" have an effect on the recorded results of the double slit experiment. Realize that sophisticated equipment is used to interpret the results of the experiment plus also realize it is a recording of the experiment. Meaning our consciousness was not even present nor aware of the experiment occuring. Plus the experiment happens on a time scale and size scale we can not possibly "consciously be aware of." Besides how would our consciousness affecting the results work? Is their a distance component to it? Does me sitting on the other side of the world can consciously affect the results of an experiment? Is it a popular vote of conscious minds that determines the outcome? Or is it whoever that is doing the experiment can decide the conscious effect? Those tiny forces can figure out which individual conscious is experimenting with it and knows to change the results? Please tell me after reading this paragraph you realize how ridiculous the concept of "human consciousness has on affecting the results of the double slit experiment.

The "controversy" around the double slit experiment is apparently we do not yet have the tools to properly observe the experiment without the tools used to observe (NOT OUR EYES OR OUR CONSCIOUSNESS!) the experiment without affecting the result of the experiment, the computers, the electron based tools etc.

The double slit experiment is only a demonstration that light and matter can display characteristics of both classically defined waves and particles.

No magic or woo woo involved. Just physics, or more precisely, quantum mechanics

Cognostic's picture
SPUDNIK: THIS IS WOO WOO

SPUDNIK: THIS IS WOO WOO BULLSHIT >>>>> "consciousness does have a affect on the world around us also" All the experiment demonstrates is that if you look for a particle you will find a particle and if you look for a wave you will find a wave. What you measure for is what you get. NOTHING TO DO WITH CONSCIOUSNESS.

"Ideas are frequently misunderstood or purposefully misrepresented in the media. This is never more true then when Young’s Double-slit experiment is presented as evidence that the presence of a human being can fundamentally change the behavior of matter at a particle level.

"...today (02/07/18) Nestled among reviews of smartphones and news of Facebook glitches, the claim that consciousness can cause changes in matter and that this is demonstrated in Young’s double-slit experiment."

"The double-slit experiment and the odd behaviour of particles when ‘observed’ is often used in support of the idea that the human mind can fundamentally alter matter."

A Disclaimer: You can believe what you want but you don’t get to misrepresent science.

"It is not the presence of the conscious observer that collapses the wave function, it’s the action they perform on the system that causes the wave function collapse. It is also vital to note that these are the results that are obtained whether researchers are present as the experiment is conducted or they have retreated to the Dog and Duck for a pint.
So what is causing the change in the particle’s behavior?"

"it is a scientific experiment that has time after time shown that consciousness does have a affect on the world around us"

NO

The double slit experiment and the subsequent 1998 Weizmann experiment prove that it is not consciousness but rather an observer that can affect the experiment. They tested with a sensor, and humans were at a distant location.

A piece of metal, a sensor can have the same effect as a human. Thus, your references to just a consciousness having an effect is incorrect.

Spudnik - the double split experiment showing that conscious observation changes and structures the way atoms act...

You are mischaracterizing the results of the famous double slit experiment.

Grinseed's picture
I alwsys took the double slit

I alwsys took the double slit experiment as a proof of the weirdness of quantum physics over Newtonian. ie that getting down to sub atomic particle scales the observer would affect outcomes and produce results that showed light to be a wave and a particle at the same time..as an example of that divide of quantum and Newtonian....this was decades ago in high school....when did the woo woo come in?

Its difficult to make

Its difficult to make observations and measurements without interfering on any scale, not just the sub-atomic. Though my professors disagree (because we can contrast it with PET scans), I've often speculated that the magnetism of an fMRI machine is interfering at some level with the brains normal function. At the end of the day neurons fire through the movement of ions, and ions have a charge; plus we know that stronger, more localize magnetic pulses to the motor cortex can make your arms move and jolt.

So the question I always ask, is how do we know that we aren't just observing how the brain functions under a magnetic field, as opposed to how it functions in the real world. Luckily the resolution of these machines is so low that the answer probably doesn't even matter; but as the resolution increase I think that question will become more important.

Nyarlathotep's picture
Breezy - ...is how do we know

Breezy - ...is how do we know that we aren't just observing how the brain functions under a magnetic field, as opposed to how it functions in the real world.

The obvious first step is to find a very different way to measure it, and see if you get the same results.

Nyarlathotep's picture
Another method would be to

Another method would be to take a situation where you have good reason to believe you know the outcome; then measure it over and over again with your equipment, each time with a random field strength. See if you can express the error rate as a function of the field strength.

One thing to remember about Kaku. Yes he has more education into Theoretical Physics. However, remember most of what he speaks is just fantasy. Most of what he speaks cannot even be tested. What is the minimum requirement for a hypothesis? It MUST be testable. If it cannot be tested, then it is just a fantastical idea. Not even a hypothesis, let alone a theory.

I love his thinking because he has some really great ideas. But that is all they are. Ideas. Until we can actually test his ideas, they are nothing more than ideas for a good science fantasy story.

I wonder though if it could

I wonder though if it could also be evidence against the existence of a god because when you think about it the atoms fall out of order when you look away but then fall in to order when your conscious observation is present so then if there was a great conscious observer like a god that was in all places at once then wouldn't that mean the atoms would not fall out of order when you wasn't observing them because god would still be observing them what you guys think ??

when there is a observer in

when there is a observer in the room the atoms act in a uniformed manor when there is no observer the atoms act in a non uniformed manor so many scientist claim that it is strong evidence to show the effect consciousness has on atoms i don't think this is just a new age thing mustard up . I have heard the argument that the instruments in the room may have some effect but then quit a few scientists argue strongly against that idea so its a hard one but i don't think its something to just go ahh well sounds like drippy hippy stuff not when so many scientists are startled by it
