Im more scared now i have no clue whats going to happen than when i thought heaven was a possibility.
See if it turns out one of the thousands of religions was actually right (and we have to admit there is a tiny probability) we are screwed. We could not accept any without evidence because of the way we are and theres no evidence. So we would in essence have been made just to go to whichever ones bad place. Bit unfair as in the past (apparently) people got to see evidence.

I do not fear death, even

I do not fear death, even though when it comes it might involve intense and even terrifying pain, because being an atheist, I do not believe in an afterlife. Any suffering involved in the process of dying will end with my death, and after that, nothing, I will be no more.

Did a little research someone

Did a little research someone did the math the math estimated 108 billion humans have existed and of those over 90% have gone to hell if christianity is correct.
Well atleast we atheists will have company lol

I have no fear of death, I do

I have no fear of death, I do not believe in an afterlife, but I know the particles that make me up will be recycled back in to the universe, that for me is is the cycle of life. This is our personal human expirence and as far as anyone can understand you only have one. This gives more reason to cherish the life you have and try to make the most of the opportunities that present themselves to us.

So Thom, you have no fear

So Thom, you have no fear that your life will end sooner rather then later?
You don't fear that death might take away your loved ones?
You claim that you don't fear of death and yet you avoid it everyday? Why?
You fear it because you prefer living, thus death ends your life. It halts your desires and choices. It is your natural enemy.
You want to live because you like living even if you don't know it.
You simply cannot be still alive if you don't fear death, even if you won't admit it.

Thom Parslow's picture
My friend, I understand your

My friend, I understand your point if view on the matter and while of course life is preferable, its inevitable conclusion is death. If you spend your time being afraid of death then you can miss out on opportunities that could be 1 in a life time.
Secondly I'm sorry to throw in a depressive story but I have attempted suicide before in the form of an overdose, although it isn't the most direct way to do such a thing, I can assure you the intent was there all the same.
There is also something else...
My belief.. That matter is but energy condensed to a small vibration, to a frequency we can perceive, in to a body and a brain that we can become subjectively conscious of ourselves.
I believe we are the universe manifested in to self awareness, its why on a fundamental level we are all made from the same thing. We are all the same thing. I don't believe in death per se, I don't believe in a soul that is Thom Parslow, I believe this energy that is a soul relieves its earthly bonds and all identity is lost only to be picked up by another organism capable of receiving it.
I believe our subconscious minds (and concious minds for that matter) are gateways to this energy (soul) and it's just a repeating cycle of this energy being received by a living entity then returning to the source. I have come to this conclusion through a huge amount of research and also a personal experiment with an hallucinogenic substance, which corroborates with many other testimonies from people who have done similar things, both in lab and personally.
But its ok, I know my views might be a little but out there. If you think that, that's fine by me. We all have a great deal of control in our lives enough for us to have a great deal of choice. As a human I respect your right to live and believe whatever you like. I would only hope the same in return.

Hmm interesting thought, that

Hmm interesting thought, that is similar to mine.
I have done my homework on that too.
Although I agree with your belief about energy. We are energy.
Did you kow that the energy in 1 cm cube of vacum(space) is infinit?

Nvm EDIT:

However you failed to answer my questions.

The fact that you said that life is preferabe shows that you choose to live rather then die.
Now death will stop that choice of yours.
Thus you must fear that death will happen before you want it to happen.

Imagine you are in the bathroom and making some big shit. Would you like to die in that position?lol
I know it is funny but it is a funny example why people fear death.
It is the lack of choice that death brings with it that people fear.
It is something in you, you were made this way.
To choose.
Death is your natural enemy since it is the enemy of choice.

I am not saying that you must let fear control your actions.
I am just saying that you should not deny the fact that fear of death is there, even if you control it. you must acknowledge its existence in you to truly understand yourself.
It has a say in your actions.

About the energy part.
I think that we are all connected though this energy that shapes us.
And that it is not the nucleus that shapes the atom but its the space/energy in between since it consists of 99% of whats there.
Did you know that 99% of a human body is space? Since every atom of your body is 99% space.
If you are interested in this subject, I would be glad to discuss it with ya.

Death is just the cease of

Death is just the cease of biological function. People fear it because they don't know what happens or where they 'go'. That is where religion, in its simplest form, originates. I, personally, don't fear death. Thousands of people die every hour of every day. Maybe we're just overthinking it. We, as primitive creatures, act upon our emotions, desires, fears, etc. We make things up and maybe even make a fuss about nothing. Your consciousness exists with your thoughts and knowledge, with your ripened brain. One's ability to make decisions based on the body they exist in. When you die, there is no longer a body to hold your knowledge, to feel pain, to make decisions. Therefore, even if it's hard to imagine, you will no longer be conscious. There is no more you.

Jeff Vella Leone's picture
You don't know that.

You don't know that.
Ignoring all the research about conciseness. and the holographic universe theory is surly not scientific.
Our knowledge might actually be stored somewhere, we are still researching this. So don't jump to conclusions.

Mothflight's picture
Of course I don't know it.

Of course I don't know it. Nobody really KNOWS anything about subjects like this. I am speaking in terms of logic.

Like I said, we're probably

Like I said, we're probably just overthinking it. Of course people don't want to accept that, when death comes, they'll be gone. I'm not saying we shouldn't question things or take the easy way out. We just shouldn't dwell so much on impossible children's books and the questions of pure suggestion.

Jeff Vella Leone's picture
Yea it is hard for people to

Yea it is hard for people to accept but there is where hope come into play.
The idea of dieing before achieving my goals in life terrifies me.
Yet i cannot say that i am not curious on what happens.
It is a teological argument that I myself have mixed feelings about.

Though I agree with "We just shouldn't dwell so much on impossible children's books and the questions of pure suggestion."

I do not fear death at all

I do not fear death at all for the same reason that Mark Twain didn't:
"I do not fear death. I had been dead for billions and billions of years before I was born, and had not suffered the slightest inconvenience from it".

Jeff Vella Leone's picture
Mark Twain was simply wrong.

Mark Twain was simply wrong.
There is a difference between being dead and not exist yet.
+ he is making a claim where he has no information about.
we do not know if we are following some kind of destiny.(or if destiny exists)
we do not know if we existed before.
we do not know if we are just dreaming this world

a phrase like; "I had been dead for billions and billions of years before I was born" is simply arrogant and stupid.

So tony, your claim of; "not fear death at all" is based on an arrogant and stupid assumption, thus your claim is wrong if it depends just on Mark Twain unfunded claim.

im very scared. i have been a christian for a lot of my life and am still a teenager and havent figured things out. yet. To hear that when we die its all over is hearbreaking to me. if i knew for a fact that was true 100% i wouldnt even care if i died at all. i really wouldnt because with no after life there is no purpose to this world to me. Although this world is fascinating it doesnt matter to me if everything will just end. Thinking about my inevitable death and how it will probably all end with no after life still scares me.

LegendOfSonic - It is no

LegendOfSonic - It is no accident that you are fearful. The most prolific religions all instill fear to paralyze thought, especially in the young. You can sadly see it in some of the posters above who while they have likely dismissed most of religion, they are still holding onto the "immortality greed" that it promises by playing games with the word "energy".

Ah, Legend, you're bringing

Ah, Legend, you're bringing out the mama in me with your post and I wish we could sit, face to face, and talk about life and living. But all I can do is send your a cyber hug and some words...I'll ask you to trust me, and hope that you will/can.

You have a lot of life ahead of you. I'm on the opposite end of that spectrum (yep, I'm an old fart). But, because of that, I can tell you that life is not, in its entirety, heartbreaking just because there is nothing after it. There are heartbreaking times, but on the whole, it is wonderous, and magical, and, more than anything else, worth it. Go after it! Make it yours! Wrap your arms around it, share it with others, male it mean something to yourself!

The meaning of life is living.

Whether there is or is not anything beyond death makes no difference to your ability to fully embrace this life. It is what you have now. Kick its ass!

Try this for an alternative

Try this for an alternative view that might possibly help ...

"Death does not concern us,
because as long as we exist, death is not here.

And when it does come, we no longer exist."

I would be lying if I said

I would be lying if I said that death was not frightening to me. There is nothing wrong with harboring fears, just don't let those fears rule your life. Instead, I come to terms with my fears. Life is more worth living when I know I am with the void when I die.

The rest of the world will live on, and perhaps I can make it better for everyone before I die.

I am quite afraid before

I am quite afraid before because of the pain it will inflict on my loved ones. But that's a part of a life cycle, nothing to worry now. I am just living my life to the fullest, teaching my son how to be a good citizen and religion is the biggest joke ever created in this lifetime.

If it will come, I just hope that they'll overcome it, forget about me and live their life to the fullest. Death is just a transition from living to non living, the end of a functional brain, no more no less, not even souls, etc.

I often think about what

I often think about what would happen after I die, but I mostly think of it like this: when I die I will decide then wether or not to be afraid.

I am not afraid of death. It is inexorable. What I am afraid of regarding death is dying while my daughter is young and her having to grieve my death and grow up without her mother.

I think that this quote by

I think that this quote by Epicurus sums it up:
“Why should I fear death?
If I am, then death is not.
If Death is, then I am not.
Why should I fear that which can only exist when I do not?”

Jeff Vella Leone's picture
Precisely because you fear

Precisely because you fear that point when you are not.
Fear not the end of your existence but the fact that you won't be with your loved ones anymore, or that you won't see your children succeed in life, you might miss your own grand children being born.
All the pleasures of life end at death.
That is what you fear, the cease of such of such pleasures.

Only a psychopath with no understanding of such feelings cannot fear death.

I am not afraid of being dead

I am not afraid of being dead, it will be a relief to finally get a good night's sleep...... but I am a little nervous about the process of dying.....Like most humans I don't relish the thought of pain, dependence, loss of control etc....I guess that is why now, I eat right, exercise and stay happy, so when the end comes it comes quickly. Lingering and declining like so many people do does not interest me. If I ever end up in that situation, suicide will certainly be an option. Many of the comments have noted that religious people don't fear death because they believe in something better to come. However studies have shown convincingly that the "stronger" your faith, the more likely you are to die in the intensive care unit in a hospital and the less likely you are to die in hospice. That would indicate to me that they are more afraid of death than non-believers. After all, if you spend your whole life "fearing" god, why in the world would you want to go meet it?
