So I went to do early voting. They had a hard time finding my name on the list (my first and last names are very common, so there are lots of people in the county I share a name with). When the first poll worker gave up and called the supervisor. The supervisor asked me if I had registered outside the DMV. I told him I couldn't remember. He then told me that the people who set up stands outside the DMV to help people register or update their address are private groups. He went on to say that it is not uncommon for these groups to then discard the documents (instead of filing them) if the party you mark on your paperwork is not a party they like. Eventually he did manage to locate me in the computer and I got to vote. But I left depressed as I didn't think my opinion on the political system here could sink any lower; but it did.

I am completely stunned.
Keeping it in proportion: it is only Trump not Hitler. He's just an egotist and opportunist, not an ideologue. If President Obama couldn't get very much done domestically I trust Trump will be at least as restricted. It isn't as though he knows what he's talking about. The British and other European systems probably have fewer checks and balances and those may not be so robustly defended.
There seem to be investigations outstanding about Trump, such as allegations of sexual assault.

I think there are fraud and corruption allegations too. It seems possible he will be impeached and convicted of something.
There is a lot of anger against the establishment in the USA. There is anger about corruption in politics, about immigration and (ironically) about inequality. They have some problems they ascribe to simple racism (black lives matter) that are probably more complex than that.
So who leads the free world during the interregnum? Mr Trudeau seems intelligent but I suggest Mrs Merkel.
Last night I learned what it is like to be on death row looking at the gallows and the phone hoping for a call from the governor. And it just does not ring.
