Looking for inconsistencies or controversy in bible and koran

I want to have a few cards up my sleeve so i can make an argument. And the most popular religion in my country is islam christian and buddhist but since i already know deep enough about buddhist im just asking those two.
The reasons i ask this is because im fairly new in this site (2 days in) and new about being atheist (i'm 15, and atheist since 14)

Welcome to the forums Franz!

Welcome to the forums Franz! It is great you are an atheist, especially at your age. Once you know to use skepticism on the various god/religion claims, just like any other aspect of your life, it going to be very difficult for those religions to con you into believing them.

There is many many! inconsistencies and controversy in both the various versions of the bible and the koran.

Others on this forum are more qualified then I am. But a personal favorite of mine is:

Many bibles describe god as all powerful, all knowing and all good. If this is true, why is there evil in the world? If god is not all powerful why worship it?
If god is not good why worship it?
If god is not all knowing that most definitely is not a god, why worship it?

And ofcourse any god requires you to believe it without any real evidence, making any inconsistencies and controversy that pops up even more of an issue.

I am sure someone will be along that can point out dozens for you. I dont keep a list myself I already know all god/religion ideas are crap just from a cursory glance, and everytime I dig even a little deeper it see evidence everywhere the various god concepts are man made and typically used to con other people for money, power, and control.

@LogicFTWAnd ofcourse any god

@LogicFTW

And ofcourse any god requires you to believe it without any real evidence, making any inconsistencies and controversy that pops up even more of an issue.

Couldn’t agree more! Whenever someone has the temerity to point out the inconsistencies in scripture, they are simply rationalized away- as is the case with other forms of magical thinking, like conspiracy theories, and with older people who still believe in Santa Claus for some reason- and the latter I should know; my 12-year-old brother (whom I will refer to as “John” for privacy reasons) still believes in Santa. Whenever I try to point out an inconsistency in Santaclausism, John just rationalizes it away with either a) an appeal to authority (“But NASA tracks him!”) or b) special pleading (“Santa is able to travel at the faster-than-light speeds required to deliver billions of presents in one night because his sleigh has a magic shield that would prevent him from plasmating! It’s [sic] science!!!”). Other times, John just tries to “proselytize” to me by making shockingly religionesque assertions like “He’ll give you a [insert awesome present here] if you just believe...”

All because my parents never told him the truth about Santa, and allowed him to indoctrinate himself... John is a a telling example of what happens if you don’t tell a child the truth behind imaginary beings.

Yep fully agree and excellent

Yep fully agree and excellent example.

It always strikes me really odd when someone says they believe in their god, but will say with great conviction they do not believe in Santa Claus, or the tooth fairy or Thor, Odin, etc. What rules of evidence did they apply to those other concepts that suddenly do not apply to their own god idea? They never seem to want to answer. Ofcourse, we know it is because they have no answer. But their ability to rationalize still amazes me to this day even though I see it over and over again.

Then again they had thousands of years and millions upon millions of people practicing.

@LogicFTW The reason why that

@LogicFTW The reason why that is is because they use an evasionary tactic called special pleading, aka distorting logic to force it to fit into the narrow lens of their particular religion.

I remember one service at church many moons ago back when I believed, in which some of the adults of the church re-enacted a scene from a Buybull verse. One of them was pretending to pray to a god called “Spongebob Baal” (the “Spongebob” part was added because “he’s not real”) and just as they were about to make the “sacrifice” (a box of chocolates in this case), someone out of the blue came in, confiscated the “sacrifice” and left the room, and this example was used to show how praying to the “false” gods doesn’t work. Now that I think of it, this seems an awful lot like a demonstration that we atheists would do for any god or goddess. As the famous saying goes:

”We are all atheists about most of the gods that humanity has ever believed in. Some of us just go one god further.”
~Richard Dawkins

For Buddhism, look into J.

For Buddhism, look into J. Krishnamurti and his talks with Buddhists. In Buddhism you spend years learning something so you can forget it and obtain enlightenment. The idea of rebirth is one of the most horrible philosophies on the planet. It's directly responsible for cast systems and all the horrors that go along with them.

So true. So far I have read the first few pages of the Wholly Cooran, and on each and every page I have found not only ad-hominems directed at "the disbelievers", but I have also seen plenty of strawmen (which normally start with "They say, _______"), as well as childish Hell-threats that bear striking resemblance to those that the Christians give us on a daily basis.

"...as well as childish Hell-threats that bear striking resemblance to those that the Christians give us on a daily basis."

Did you know that the Jesus character mentions hell in 73 verses? That does not include other mentions.

Hell is mentioned 72 times in the Koran.

Rohan M.'s picture
@Dio Nah, I think that Hell

@Dio Nah, I think that Hell is mentioned way more often than that in both- as I recall when reading both the Buybull and Cooran, they usually refer to Hell as "the punishment" or "the most dire punishment" or something along those lines.

Sky Pilot's picture
Hell and punishment are not

Hell and punishment are not the same thing in either the Bible or in the Koran.

Punishment is mentioned 25 times in the KJV. A good example of how the word punishment is used if found in the passage from Zechariah 14:16-19 (KJV) =
"16 And it shall come to pass, that every one that is left of all the nations which came against Jerusalem shall even go up from year to year to worship the King, the Lord of hosts, and to keep the feast of tabernacles.

17 And it shall be, that whoso will not come up of all the families of the earth unto Jerusalem to worship the King, the Lord of hosts, even upon them shall be no rain.

18 And if the family of Egypt go not up, and come not, that have no rain; there shall be the plague, wherewith the Lord will smite the heathen that come not up to keep the feast of tabernacles.

19 This shall be the punishment of Egypt, and the punishment of all nations that come not up to keep the feast of tabernacles."

*The feast of tabernacles is also known as Sukkot or the Feast of Ingathering. It is included in the 6th Commandment = Exodus 34:22. In 2019 it will be from sunset October 13 until nightfall on October 20.*

Punishment is mentioned 171 times in the Koran. https://quod.lib.umich.edu/cgi/k/koran/koran-idx?type=simple&q1=punishme... It can include such things as murdering the person or chopping off his body parts.

Yeah, you have a point... the

Yeah, you have a point... the caste thing is the thing that I hate the most about the religion of my Indian ancestors... and IMO the main problem with Buddhism is the fact that like the Abrahmic religions, it teaches that you either believe and get a reward in he afterlife (Nirvana), or you will cease to exist (the latter is what happens IRL), which is a kind of scare-tactic that religions throughout history have and do use to keep followers uncritically believing.

Cognostic's picture
Yes, it's origins.

Yes, it's origins. Buddhists still practice it as well. The next Dali Lama has been reincarnated in the world someplace and they will begin looking for him soon. The cast mentality is alive and well in most Asian countries. I believe it is also found in Jainism, and Taoism among others. Hinduism being the oldest religion certainly has first claim,

Karma and reincarnation are horrible ideas.

@Franz …..

@Franz …..

This is something I've posted in the past …… but it does fit the bill for your request...…

OK lets take it back to basics.

“Jesus of Nazareth”.

Why Nazareth ?
The writer of Matthew started the deceit that the title 'Jesus the Nazarene' should in some manner relate to Nazareth, by quoting 'prophecy':
"And he came and dwelt in a city called Nazareth: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophets, He shall be called a Nazarene." – Matthew 2.23.

With this, Matthew closes his fable of Jesus's early years.

Yet Matthew is misquoting– he would surely know that NOWHERE in Jewish prophetic literature is there any reference to a Nazarene.

What is 'foretold' (or at least mentioned several times) in Old Testament scripture is the appearance of a Nazarite.
(Note1 this makes more sense than the possibility of Nazareth being a “typo” for stem or branch. )

Don’t forget the Jews were expecting a real blood and fury messiah to save the nation … Samson was a Nazarite…not the perambulating hippy that Jesus is purported to be.

For example:
"For, lo, thou shalt conceive, and bear a son; and no razor shall come on his head: for the child shall be a Nazarite unto God from the womb: and he shall begin to deliver Israel out of the hand of the Philistines." – Judges 13.5.

Matthew slyly substitutes one word for another.
By replacing Nazarite ('he who vows to grow long hair and serve god') with a term (Nazarene) which appears to imply 'resident of' he is able to fabricate a hometown link for Jesus.

Ok not really a big deal , some scribe gets into a muddle trying to make up a prophesy to make his tale more palatable to the mainly Jewish audience he was expecting to be addressing. The very early Christians were initially mainly Jewish converts.

But then there is this …

The City of Nazareth looms large in the story of Jesus and his family. And yet what do we really know of this holy City.
Well, it is apparently big enough to have its own synagogue, for Jesus to preach in. And it is on or near a precipice. So it should be a fairly simple process to locate this metropolitan hub of first century Galilee.

Surely either a Greek or Roman geographer can help us with this?
But, No, not a word .No Roman or Greek speaks of this 1st century city.

Well what of Jewish writers.

Josephus In his histories,

Josephus has a lot to say about Galilee (only 900 square miles in area).
During the first Jewish war, in the 60s AD, Josephus led a military campaign back and forth across the tiny province.
Josephus mentions 45 cities and villages of Galilee – yet Nazareth … not at all.

So , it appears the only reference to this elusive city is in the Bible , thus let us now examine what the “Good Book” has to say…

Well there are the obvious references in the 4 Gospels.
But looking further we start to notice strange omissions.

The Old Testament ,in its entirety, has not one mention of Nazareth.

Further, the Book of Joshua (19.10,16) – in what it claims is the process of settlement by the tribe of Zebulon in the area – records twelve towns and six villages and yet omits any 'Nazareth' from its list.

Curious … perhaps if we go the source for the Old Testament we may do better …
Lets look to the Talmud.

The Talmud, despite naming 63 Galilean towns, says absolutely nothing about Nazareth, neither does early rabbinic literature.
Perhaps Nazareth is only significant to the new cult of Christianity ?
But no .

No lesser person than Saint Paul himself , prolific letter writer and enforcer to the early church.
In all his attributed works he refers to Jesus more than 220 times but Nazareth ?
Not once.

Ah well ,when all else fails we can always rely on science.
The archaeologists must surely be able to nail down this elusive city.

Nope .
Despite all archaeological efforts over a period of nearly 60 years there is NO evidence of any sort for a city ,town ,hamlet or village at Nazareth during the 1st century.
What evidence there is all dates to after the Bar Kochba revolt of AD 135 when Nazareth was finally re-settled after being deserted for approximately 700 years following the Assyrian invasion of 738 BCE.
So a (so far) non existent town , fits with a non existent prophesy.

(and please don’t pull the “Nazareth House 2009” card its already been debunked)

Just in case you have a problem with prophesies being falsified …

Virgin Birth.
“Matthew” maintains that 'Isaiah' had prophesied that Jesus would be born of a virgin:"Behold, a virgin will be with child, and will bring forth a son, and they will call his name Emmanuel," – Matthew 1.23.

Matthew's source is the Septuagint (Isaiah 7.14). But the Greek-speaking translators of this version of Hebrew scripture (prepared in 3rd century BC Alexandria) had slipped up and had translated 'almah' (young woman) into the Greek 'parthenos' (virgin).

http://www.mechon-mamre.org/e/et/et1007.htm

Honestly translated, the verse reads:

'Behold, the young woman has conceived — and bears a son and calls his name Immanuel.'
Not quite as impressive as a virgin is it…?

But it is verifiable … check this link for the Hebrew version … http://www.chabad.org/library/bible_cdo/aid/15938
The slip did not matter at the time, for in context, Isaiah’s prophecy (set in the 8th century BC but probably written in the 5th century BC) had been given as reassurance to King Ahaz of Judah that his royal line would survive, despite the ongoing siege of Jerusalem by the Syrians.
And it did.
In other words, the prophecy had nothing to do with events in Judaea eight hundred years into the future!
Yet upon this doctored verse from Isaiah the deceitful scribe who wrote Matthew was to concoct the infamous prophecy that somehow the ancient Jewish text had presaged the miraculous birth of Jesus.

Born in Bethlehem.
The 8th century BC Jewish sage 'Micah' writes about Assyrian invaders and a series of skirmishes in Samaria. He predicts (quite incorrectly as it turns out) that a ruler will arise from David's Bethlehem and conquer Assyria.

What does Micah actually say? The Massoretic (Hebrew) text of Micah 5.2, translated, says:
“But thou, Bethlehem Ephrathah who is little among the clans of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be a ruler in Israel.”
'Bethlehem Ephrathah' here refers to the clan who are descendants from a man called Bethlehem, the son of Caleb's second wife Ephrathah referred to in 1 Chronicles –

it does not refer to a town at all!
Undeterred, Matthew subtly alters the quoted text in his own story (2.6):
“And thou Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means the most insignificant of Judah, for out of you will come forth a ruler in Israel.”
What Matthew has done is change the reference to a clan to a reference to a city – but who would notice!

So..to summarize ....

Nazarene prophesy ..... busted.
City of Nazareth ....... busted.
Vigin Birth ......... busted.
Betlehem ......... busted.

Hope this helps.....

“... ‘round yon vi-Irvin

“... ‘round yon vi-irgin mother...” LOL that’s impossible- and remember that a lot of he people who believe in this shit are also always talking about how “abstinence is the only birth control”— *BANG* Well, there goes yet another irony meter!

Rohan M.'s picture
Oh, I’ve got two- one for

Oh, I’ve got two- one for Christianity, one for Islam:

1. Christianity— The fact that there are 5 different versions of Jesus’ birth and life. They can’t all be correct… And also, if God gave us “free will”, then why does he demand that we never use it, and what’s with the so-called “God’s Plan” that his followers keep trying to force the planet to follow? Furthermore, how can someone be his own father, born to a virgin (!), or sacrifice himself to himself?! (And the latter will inevitably lead to special pleading)

2. Islam— Allah is supposed to be omnipotent, and what I could gather from reading a few verses from the Wholly Cooran, he purposefully sets people up so that they will end up “disbelieving” and then punishes them eternally. If f all that’s the case, then how come this Allah felt like he needed to ask some illiterate child-rapist to write a book to tell people that he exists? Either a) he does not have full control over humanity (aka “free will”), or b) he is imaginary.

TheBlindWatchmaker's picture
Reality.

Reality.

Rohan M.'s picture
Exactly. The biggest

Exactly. The biggest inconsistency is reality itself- that no prayer, regardless of what god/goddess, ever works. On all of the instances that they are said to have worked, they were actually caused by non-supernatural factors, which are always completely ignored. If they ultimately end up not working, this is simply rationalized away with “arguments” like this one:

“He has more important things to worry about” —and btw this rationalization was actually made word-for-word by a Christian fanatic at school (whom I will refer to as “Joe Shmoe”) who didn’t like some of the things I was saying in a discussion and prayed for his Sky-Daddy to “smite” me— Then why doesn’t he just worry about them? Why is it that he is able to help a student pass a test (which they studied hard for in advance, but that’s completely irrelevant of course), but then is unable to stop an evil satanic commie from challenging poor Joe? And btw when I couldn’t help but chuckle at Joe Shmoe’s rationalization, he became very embarrassed, and then proceeded to move the empty chairs so that they all surrounded the chair that I was sitting in (just so you know, this happened in the lunchroom) to form what Joe Shmoe called “a prison”, and asserted that all this was a “divine punishment from God”, and then had this rather disturbing fantasy involving a Kalashnikov (although I didn’t hear the whole of it).

Howdy, Franz! Welcome to the

Howdy, Franz! Welcome to the AR. Great to have you with us. So you want to know about a "few" inconsistencies in the bible, huh?.... *looooooong slooooooow whistle*.... Tall order there, hombre. Yikes! Where to start? Pretty much open it up to just about any random page, and you could probably pick out several at a time. Still, we're always happy to help here. Therefore, I submit to you a post I made to another AR member asking for the same info. The following "inconsistencies" are simply the Top 10 found in Genesis Chapters 1 thru 3. Let me know what you think. (Oh, and that other member was a female, so the following intro was for her. Just so you know...) Enjoy...

Here you go, little lady. Had to do sort of a rush job on this, but I hope it helps. Keep in mind, these are just the glaring highlights. I had to skip over a few more subtle issues. Plus, I'm afraid I got to ten issues before making it to Chapter 4. And from what I know about Chapter 4, that could end up being a whole other list on its own. *chuckle* Anyway, this should at least get you started somewhat, I hope. Enjoy... (Oh, it's a little lengthy. My apologies.)

1. God made plants and vegetation on the Third Day. (1:9-13) He did not make the sun or moon until the Fourth Day. (1:14-19) Somebody please explain to me how vegetation grew/survived without sunlight.

2. Apparently, there is more than one God. God said, “Let US make man in OUR image.” (1:26) Also, after God got pissed at Adam and Eve for eating from the Tree of Knowledge, he said, “Behold! Man has become as one of US!” And so he booted their asses out of the Garden of Eden before they had a chance to eat from the Tree of Life.

3. On the Sixth Day, God created man and woman (1:27). However, way after the Seventh Day after Adam has already gotten settled into the Garden of Eden, God decides Adam needs a “helper”. (2:18) Therefore, he made a woman for Adam. (2:21-22) Call me crazy, but aside from the screwed up timeline “whoopsie”, it seems to me an all-knowing/all-powerful god should have already had that whole man/woman thing figured into his plan from the very beginning…. *shrugging shoulders*…

4. Ummmm…. Why, exactly, would an omnipotent god ever have to rest? (2:2)... *scratching head*… Am I missing something here?

5. God made man/Adam from “the dust of the earth.” (2:7) Yet, God had to put Adam to sleep and yank out one of his ribs in order to make woman/Eve. (2:21-22) Again… Am I missing something here?

6. A supposedly PERFECT and ALL-KNOWING God makes the Garden of Eden and places two totally forbidden trees (The “Tree of Life” and the “Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil”) right smack-dab in the middle of it within easy access of Adam and Eve. (Who happen to be two incredibly innocent and naïve creatures with zero knowledge of harm, danger, or death.) But at least he gives Adam a stern warning not to eat of it. (2:8-9 and 2:15-17) Yet then he has the audacity to be mad when Adam and Eve actually do eat from one of the trees. DUDE! You should have seen that coming!!! PLUS, you could have put those damn trees ANYWHERE ELSE on the entire planet! But, Nnnnnooooooo…! That would have made too much sense, I suppose.

7. Here’s a very subtle one for you I just happened to notice when looking for these others. After God made Eve for Adam he proclaimed, “And a man shall leave his father and mother to be with his wife.” (2:24) Ummm…. Errrrr…. Hmmmm….. Yeah, I’ll just let that one sink in on its own for you…

8. Oh! Here’s a goodie! The serpent! For starters, a talking snake? Really??? (3:1) Mainly, though, is the fact that GOD MADE THE SERPENT and had it in the garden in the first place! KNOWING it would tempt Eve and cause her and Adam to eat the forbidden fruit. What the…??? Seriously??? And exactly WHOSE fault is that suppose to be, pray tell? (Side note, here. Between this one and number 6, I could probably write and entire thesis. *chuckle*)

9. Ya know, for a God that is supposedly omnipotent and omniscient, he certainly does ask quite a few questions: A. Adam and Eve eat from the Tree of Knowledge and discover they are naked, so they hide from God in the garden. God comes strolling along and calls out, “Hey! Where the hell are you two crazy kids?!?.... Yoooo-hoooo…. Ollie-Ollie oxen free!” (3:8-9) B. Once Adam lets God know where they are, God asks, “Why are you hiding from me?” At which point Adam explains, “Well, dang, man. Just noticed me twigs-n-berries are showing. It’s a little embarrassing.” Which causes God to ask, “Hey! Who let you know you are naked?” (3:11) C. When Adam threw Eve under the bus by blaming her for making him eat the fruit, God asked Eve, “What have you done?” (3:13) And all of those questions from a supposedly omniscient God within just a few verses of ONE CHAPTER. Heck, and I haven’t even made it to Chapter 4 yet.

10. Here is another “WTF?” moment. Adam and Eve have pissed off the All-knowing, All-powerful, All-loving, and All-forgiving God, and so he kicked their asses out of the Garden of Eden. Okay. Fine. Whatever. But then this same ALL-POWERFUL God has to place an angel with a flaming sword at the “garden gate” to keep anybody else from entering and to protect both of the forbidden trees. (3:24) Sooooo….. Let me get this straight. He can create the entire universe and Earth and every living creature on the planet, and He knows EVERYTHING, but he needs a “guard” to protect a tiny speck of land that HE created???.... Ummm, okay. Yeah, sure. I’ll buy that.

Tin-Man's picture
Hey, Franz, found another one

Hey, Franz, found another one that I posted several weeks back to the same AR member. This one comes from between Genesis 37 to 50. Keep in mind, this doesn't cover anywhere NEAR every inconsistency I noticed. These are just the highlights. Also, keep in mind, we haven't even made it out of the FIRST BOOK of the bible yet.

Hey there, Little Lady. My apologies for taking so long to get back with you. Got a little busier than expected around here, and I only had a bit of time to read a few of those passages over the weekend. Okay, well, to be honest, I probably could have read a bit more, but I got to the part about Judah and Tamar and just threw my hands up. Couldn't stomach much more after that. *chuckle* But since you have mentioned them just now, allow me to hit a couple of highlights that stood out to me...

For starters, yeah, that story just "pops up" right in the middle of the Joseph story like a bad annoying commercial or something. lol Anyway, let me lay a little ground work first.

Judah has three sons by Shuah. (Can't really call her his wife for certain, because it was not made clear if they were married. It just says, "He took her and went in unto her." Seems a bit rude, but whatever.)
The sons: Er (the oldest) Onan (middle) Shelah (youngest) Okay, that should be enough...

So, Judah (the father) hooks up Er (the oldest son) with a girl named Tamar. Simple enough so far. Unfortunately, however, Er was a "wicked" young boy, so (The) God (father) had Er fed to the fishes. Now, we have no idea what the hell Er did to piss off (The) God (father), but it must have been some really bad shit, because God didn't even send one of his henchmen to take out Er. God took care of that business HIMSELF. Wow....(Which begs the question, by the way. Did God whack Er before or after the honeymoon? And, if Er was such a horribly wicked dude, why did God allow him to get married in the first place? Why not kill him BEFORE he got married and save the bride a bunch of grief?.... Grrr.... Now you are starting to see why I got tired of reading that crap...)

Anyway, so Judah is like, "Well, damn. Guess Er was a dumb-ass. Oh, well. Plan B. Hey, Onan! Get your ass in here!" And Judah tells Onan, "Okay, Champ, you're up! Go bang your sister-in-law for your wicked dead brother. I need some grandchildren, dammit!" But somewhere in Onan's brain he was thinking, "Something just isn't right about this." Or maybe he was thinking, "What the...? Hey, maybe I don't want kids." Because he obviously had no problems screwing Tamar, but at the last second he pulled out and splooged all over the floor. Now, for whatever reason, (The) God (father) got PISSED about that. (Not sure why. Maybe he was the one who had to clean the floor? I dunno... *shrugging shoulders*...) Regardless, (The) God (father) also whacked Onan who was soon wearing concrete boots at the bottom of the sea feeding the fishes with Er.

At this point, Judah was like, "Awww, c'mon! What the hell's it gonna take for me to get this chick pregnant???" Well, since little Shelah was apparently still young enough to be picking his nose and eating the boogers, Judah sent Tamar back home to her daddy (supposedly to keep her out of trouble) until Shelah was old enough to take his chances with the cursed vagina of Tamar. And from there, it just gets even MORE ridiculous, if you can believe THAT!.... *rubbing eyes with heels of hands*.... *grooooan*.... I think I need an aspirin... Uh, so, yeah... Anyway... That's about as much as I could stand of all of that. Sorry I could not give you any insight into the rest of it, but my bs tolerance levels are not quite as high as they once were. *chuckle* You keep searching and learning, though, Miss AUS. I have to admit, your stomach is a whole lot stronger than mine if you can get through all of that crud. *grin*

And adding on to what Tin Man

And adding on to what Tin Man write above, I’ve got some for Islam:

•I’m currently reading through the Wholly Cooran for the same reason why this thread was started, and I’ve reached page 20 in the second book (“The Heifer”), and so far I haven’t found even one page that doesn’t include at least one strawman or ad-hominem involving the “disbelievers”.

•Like the Christian God, Allah always seems to refer to himself in the plural, indicating that according to legend, either a) he has multiple personality disorder, or b) there are more deities out there.
